I know it is a vertially impossible task, but >to not go out of a person's way to hurt someone and to discuss things >without becoming angry is something I want to achieve and can try to do. I am in the martial arts for several reasons. One is to improve myself phisically. I am 40 and want to keep that youthful vigor as long as posible. Secondly, I want to help with some assistance programs like 'Kick Dugs Out Of America' after I am a BB. Third, I am hoping this will lead to a 'retirement' lifestyle and income for me in 15 years or so. (I would expect to be 3rd Dan by then.) The spirituality I take care of in non-Eastern ways. In fact I am careful not to mix the spiritual side of MA in my life. I don't mystify MA. I can break a board because of physics (Force = Mass X Velocity(Sq)). If my fist is conditioned to the force applied back at it (Every action has an equal and opposite reaction), I won't get hurt - Assuming I do the technique correctly. It will \ probably be in a location in the same town near to another school (I don't \ have any choice, there isn't a town in a 100 mile radius that doesn't have \ at least one MA school). The last flyer that i had picked up was dismal, It \ was black and white with a hand-drawn TKD'er doing a side kick with a list \ of times of classes in various sport centres around the district. No \ particular mention of the instructor style/purpose/association. No aspect of \ training singled out as to why anyone would want to train in TKD. \ I was just wondering what everyone thought attracted a person/people to \ become MA.? Look at Billboards and Magazine adds for general ideas. Try to figure out what it is about the good ones that get your attention. Figure out why the ones that suck, suck. Keep it simple. Complex is great if you're a Van Goh(sp?) fan, but lousy for advertising (there are exceptions, but they're rare). Keep it short and to the point. People generally will not take the time to read a lot of text. In general I would suggest a simple symbolic graphic which represents the philosphy of your school, or just a good eye catching one related to martial arts. Toss in a phrase of some sort to pull the viewer in. Then put necessary information (class location and times) unobtrusively at the bottom. BTW, black and white can be used very effectively. Don't write it off just because you saw a bad example. Black and white is *much* cheaper than color. If you decide to use color I suggest taking the time to do a little research (for example, McDonalds uses red and yellow because those two colors combined generally make people more receptive to food advertisements). - -David Buehrer - -- Supervisor, Database Preparation The UnCover Company mailto:dbuehrer@denver.carl.org - -- - -- "The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals. What \ are you trying to achieve as a martial artist and as a person? When I first took Karate back in '87 it was because I thought it would be neat to know Karate. For whatever reason (I suspect it was because I wasn't very mature) it didn't hold my interest and I dropped out after 9 months. When I started taking Hapkido last year it was because I new several of the students through my sister (started in '91) and my brother (started in '96), the class looked like fun, I wanted a fun form of exercise, and I wanted to be challenged (and a part of me still thought it would be neat to know a martial art :). I didn't really have any goals. Over a year later I have goals which are either directly or partially the result of taking Hapkido. To strive for excellence in everything I do. To set a good example for others. To grow spiritually. To learn as much as I can so that some day I may pass it on to others. - -David Buehrer - -- Supervisor, Database Preparation The UnCover Company mailto:dbuehrer@denver.carl.org - -- - -- "The light is reached not by turning back from the darkness, but by going through it." ------------------------------ From: Judi Connelly Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 11:02:24 -0400 (EDT) Subject: the_dojang: From Nedzad a letter of thanks Folks, I'm preparing to send the next shipment to Nedzad next week. Advanced Nunchaku by Fumio Demura and Dan Ivan Ohara Publications, Inc. Burbank, CA ISBN 0-89750-021-0 I started learning the kata last night. It's shorter but more impressive than the basic kata. Maybe I'll do this in the tournament coming up instead of the basic kata as I had planned. We'll see how well I have it down by then. I am working on scanning the poster of the basic kata. The poster is larger than I thought so it will be several scans to get it all in. If you're a member of the World Tang Soo Do Association, you can purchase them for $39.00US each or all three for $103.00US. If you're not a member of the WTSDA, they run about $69.00US a piece. If you were going to buy just one book, I would look into "Volume I: The Essence" as it is a definite must-read. If you're just interested in a book with the forms and techniques, it might be cheaper to purchase the new book by GM Kang Uk Lee. It has the all the basic forms, as well as some of the advanced forms (rohai, jindo, etc.) I think it was only about $18.00US when I picked it up at Waldenbooks. I'm not a huge fan of the book, YMMV... There is also "Tang Soo Do" by Hwang Kee, as well as Hwarang Do by Joo Bang, Lee Tang Soo!!! Donna Not sure if they still do, but in Chuck Norris' system you had to get a blue belt in BJJ before you could test for 1st Dan in his system. And a BJJ blue belt can take awhile.
