She is very unhappy with the way the school is being run lately. She was injured in class not long ago - school mate posted about her, the one with the broken hand. She wants to change schools yet being so close to getting her black belt is holding her back. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what she should do (stay or change schools) or has anyone been thru something similar? I should add that she has spoken to the instructor about her dissatisfaction with the school and how things are in the (I wouldn't have told him anything because no one wants someone else to tell him or her what's wrong and how to fix it). The instructor does not seem to care. And he's isn't willing to listen either! What can the students do in the school to make sure that the instructor listens to them since we can't really kick him out. Any suggestion are welcome. I don't have the book in front of me) >series.. Apparently these were recently developed by Hwang Kee, and are >named for a series of stars Hwang Kee's mother saw in the sky when he >born. It is curious that he should make that association. If you read the early legends of Korea, then you will often find references to great people being born after their mother saw auspicious stars (shooting stars?), beams of (sun) light entering the body, and even babies born of eggs. I think similar legends exist in Japanese legends and probably in many other cultures. Any anthropologists in the list able to tell us where these ideas come from. Chil Sung would be 'seven stars' as in Samsung meaning 'three stars.' >Does anyone practice these forms? The movements look very non-standard, >and as far as I can tell from the pictures, they appear to be slow t'ai >chi like moves... Am I correct in this assumption? It would be nice to see pictures of these forms. Curiously, I can not recall seeing any Tangsoo-do books in Korean book shops (and I have tried!). There is a Tangsoo-do dojang, though, near my office so I may go and ask there... What do you mean by 'slow T'ai Chi,' I understood that one was supposed to do T'ai Chi slow in the first place? How slow is slow? If it is derived from T'ai Chi, when did he learn them?? Was it when he was in Manchuria in the 1930's(date?) or has he learned them more recently. Slowing things down with age is, perhaps not unexpectedly, relatively common in martial arts styles. I understand that General Choi has slowed his patterns down considerably over the last couple of years. We also do more than one style in our school, but to me TKD grading is TKD, Hapkido is Hapkido and Eskrima is Eskrima. If the master feels it`s necessary to include elements of other styles into the curriculum, they should be tested - but not separately. During our TKD tests, I sometimes require my students to demonstrate and explain basic joint locks, but I don`t require them to have, say, green belt in HKD (although some of them do...). Again, this is only IMVHO. The following is the first third or half of a knife form that was/is taught/practiced by an older Moo Duk Kwan grandmaster. Does it look familar to anyone? Know from whence it came? Ray Terry rterry@best.com 1. Start with feet shoulder width apart, hands at side. Knife is at left hip, in sheath, edge upwards. 2. Grasp knife with right hand, palm up. Step forward with right foot into back stance, slashing horizontally left-to-right, forearm parallel to the ground. (Essentially, this is an adaptation of and outside middle defense.) Hand finishes directly in front of body. 3. Step forward with left foot into a left front stance, slashing horizontally right-to-left, at neck height, palm down. Hand finishes directly in front of left shoulder. 4. Step forward with right foot into a right front stance, while circling hand down by right hip, and then over the top with a downward stabbing "ice-pick attack" motion. Hand finishes directly in front of body, forearm parallel to ground, elbow near solar plexus. etc... ------------------------------ From: d g Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 05:22:48 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #424 From: "Dennis McHenry" Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 16:56:31 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: New rebreakable boards >Has anyone else seen the new type re-breakable boards, like the ones Century >puts out?
