In my school we have tests that we have to take from about brown belt on that we have to pass in order to test for our next belt. The younger students are really struggling to learn the terms and answers for the test. Do any of you have any ideas on what we could do to help the younger students learn the terms? Do other schools do this? Thanks in advance! ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 12:41:54 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: ustu webpage In a message dated 9/3/99 11:57:55 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << > The USTU Web Site has reverted almost totally to what it was three weeks ago. >> why? what happened? ------------------------------ From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 12:42:21 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #439 In a message dated 9/3/99 11:57:55 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Congrats to two members of the_dojang. Any comments? suggestions? >> Well I learn Tkd and actually it can be very useful in a fight. Does your son learn one step sparring? Most of the time people only think of tkd as mostly kicks. Yes it does take advantage of the feet but it is still the art of striking and kicking. Tkd practitioners must kind of be creative when using it as self defense and not just think of it like a olympic style sparring match. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 14:38:51 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Oregon attempt to regulate MAs Does anyone have info on the recent attempt of Oregon State Senator John Lim's bill, SB 904, to regulate martial arts schools in Oregon? It is apparently similar to New Jersey's bill in that it provides for an advisory commission "to advise the Senate and the Governor on bills relating to the martial arts regulation". Any more info out there? Ray Terry rterry@best.com ------------------------------ From: "A. Boyd" Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 15:54:11 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: danjan hoep (Tan Jan breathing) A major focus of my instructor is on building total body strength as well as inner control. A good portion of every class is spent on abdominal breathing (danjan hoep). As Ray mentioned it doesn't feel very healthy to be so mechanical about what is supposed to be a natural process. Intake, hold, release - like a machine. When we do solo meditation or are cooling down we intake and release with no holding. The count is simple. The release of air should be at the same pace as the rate of intake. Inflate - deflate at the same rate. In group danjan hoep exercises our tradition is to simply judge by your own lung capacity - you want to build from what you have, not what you don't have. You intake air at a comfortable pace until your lungs are fully inflated. You then push, trying to find your centre or glean an understanding of ki, with the abdominal muscles - directing the force through relaxed and extending arms - but not producing tension anywhere and certainly not creating "balloon-head" where your face and neck tense and redden. One can imagine using inner power to move giant stones. I prefer to imagine pushing a car. While pushing breath stops in a lung sense but continues in the energy sense. Upon extension of the arms one releases the breath at the same slow rate one took it in. It can be difficult to co-ordinate all of this properly as hip and leg position, chest use and shoulder tension can all interfere. I've never felt the head pain that was described but I used to feel like I was going to launch my face like a missile when I first began training. === Anthony BT Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher For illumination on this curious occupation please follow this link: http://victorian.fortunecity.com/operatic/739 ICQ#: 45348443 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The mailing that was sent out said to see the website, but I haven't seen anything there. So, you'll have to call the office for additional information.
