Well, I wasn't sure how this would topic would go over, but since Mr. Terry is asking for volume... :) I like to play chess. I was thinking the other day that I would like to own a chess set with martial arts style pieces. I don't think I've ever seen martial art style chess pieces. So, I'm thinking of making my own, or having them made (I dabble with miniatures for other games, and know several people who take the art of making military miniatures seriously). The next question which came to mind is: what should the pieces look like? Figures with legs extended in side kicks, crescent kicks, and such immediately came to mind. However, such a piece would be inconvient to place on a chess board. I'm thinking that figures in stances would be more appropriate. I would also like to differentiate the pieces by belt rank. So, I took a moment from work to scratch down some ideas on a notepad. Throughout the day I made minor modifications, and came up with the following. Pawn: 10th Kup in a Front Stance Knight: 5th Kup in a Horse Stance Bishop: 1st Kup in a Cat Stance Rook: 1st Dan in a Back Stance (The stances are in the order in which I learned them ) Queen: 5th Dan in the middle of a step-across (moving forward from back stance to back stance) King: 7th Dan standing at ease with his/her arms at his/her side What do you think? - -David Buehrer - -- Supervisor, Database Preparation The UnCover Company mailto:dbuehrer@denver.carl.org - -- - -- "The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all of our lives." - -Einstein ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 09:13:29 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: martial games > I like to play chess. Not trying to turn this into a chess list, but some interesting info re chess I read in Robinson's Born in Blood that perhaps David can verify or deny. Chess, war game, martial arts, yeah, that's the connection... :) Chess came from Persia and the word Checkmate came from the Persian for Shah-mat, The King is Dead (think Shah as in the former Shah of Iran). Also, in the original game the Bishop piece was a war ship. The church didn't like that a game that was becoming so popular didn't have some church influence, so they replaced the ship with the Bishop. Think of how the bishop moves, like a ship tacking against the wind... This caused an uncomfortable feeling for a day or two. Last night I really put some power into a knife hand strike.........Holy &*%$, was very sore last night ice, icy-hot and Advil. This morning very very tender and stiff. Does this sound familiar to anyone??? Any suggestions. << Go see a doctor, rest, and let it heal. I partially dislocated my elbow 10 yrs ago. Had a cast, broke the cast that night, recast it the next day. 10+ yrs later, it is still loose. Youthful aggressive nothing can hurt me, stupid, attitude. Time, age, maturity have changed my perspective, a little. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 10 Sep 1999 10:31:58 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: the_dojang: RE: Painful Arm > >>From: "VJ Mitchell" > Date: Thu, 9 Sep 1999 14:15:18 -0700 > Subject: the_dojang: Painful arm > > Recently I believe that I have hyper-extended my right elbow. He kept throwing side kicks and I would just drop my arm and catch them on the arm. This musta happened about 10 times. Immediately after the match I patted myself on the back on how he couldn't touch me with his youthful kicks. Then I woke up the next morning... My elbow hurt like the devil! It hurt pretty good for the next 5 years.
