I can agree with you partly, in that when it comes down to it most of it depends on the amount of training you've had and your reaction speed/timing, and has very little to do with conscious thought. However, situational awareness and the ability plan ahead in a general sense is important too, IMHO. - -David Buehrer - -- Supervisor, Database Preparation The UnCover Company mailto:dbuehrer@denver.carl.org - -- - -- "One little smile can fill the room with sunshine." ------------------------------ From: Lady Timberland Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 14:06:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #454 I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack... Well, I've returned officially from a two-week TKD hiatus. Burnout is nto something that is necessary, but sometimes taking a break to sit back and look at the alternatives is qutie necessary, and following the injury of my toe, I needed that time out so my toe could heal properly (and so I woudn't be tempted to try and lunge for people if they stepped on that foot). Now, I returned last night to class, and one of the first things I hear from GM Kim is that he wants me testing at Kukkiwon November 21st. Yipe. I know I can do it, but so soon? Hmmmm... This shall be very very interesting. :) Now my schedule looks like nothng but school, TKD, school, TKD, maybe email, so if I'm very silent like I have been, I'm either training or doing homework, probably from my AP classes (got 2 this year). Heheheheehehehehehehehe. It feels sooooo good to be back. === Kim Jones (ladytimberland@yahoo.com) Webpage - http://members.tripod.com/NekoChan00/ AOL IM - OmegaKage IcQ - 46316779 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Do you plan \ to give the 7th Dan 7 stripes on his/her teeny black belt? :-) Or, what \ color is the 5th Dan's belt? Different schools have different colors. ...oh sure. Throw a monkey wrench into my idea why don't you :) The above pieces would work for Hapkido (as I know it). I was assuming that HKD belt colors are the same no matter where you take HKD. Is that in fact the case? Alternatively MA chess pieces could be specific to a given martial art (an HKD set, a TKD set, etc). Or, the pieces could reflect specific MAs. Knights could be TKD BBs in a very atypical TKD pose. Bishops could be HKD BBs. Pawns could be white belts in white uniforms at attention. Etc. \ Maybe you can make some sketches and post them for the group to see. Would that I could draw worth a darn :-/ However, I do know someone who's pretty decent.. if you like Anime style art :) \ Do you plan on merchandising them? I'm trying *not* to think that far ahead. Right now it's just an idea I tossed out to pick up the list volume :) \ Or are you going to custom/hand make \ your own set? That's pretty much my only option. Anyone have any suggestions for the best medium to work in? - -David Buehrer - -- Supervisor, Database Preparation The UnCover Company mailto:dbuehrer@denver.carl.org - -- - -- "The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all of our lives." - -Einstein ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 15:13:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: the_dojang: Re: Martial Games > The above pieces would work for Hapkido (as I know it). No, gup belt colors for HKD will vary as greatly as the wardrobe of a drunken colorblind musician... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: Sahbomnim@aol.com Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 19:51:19 EDT Subject: the_dojang: YOUNG OLYMPIANS From Monte Date 13 sept 1999 @ 06:45 pm EDT Does anyone have information on an organization called Young Olympians or Young Americans? Why? Because they are almost always being held a year early (remember there is no year 0AD so 2000 is actually the last year of the second millenium since the birth of christ). ------------------------------ From: Piotr Bernat Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 07:53:38 +0200 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The New Millenium Hello > Could someone explain why people think Jan 1, 2001 is the first day of the new > millenium and not Jan 1, 2000? Because, from what I know (although I wasn`t there myself :) there was no year 0 (zero). After the year 1 B.C. there was year 1 A.D. The first millenium of our era was from the year 1 (A.D.) to 1000, our old millenium from 1001 to 2000, so it ends on December 31st, 2000. The next millenium will be from 2001 to 3000 (incl.) That`s the same in TKD or TSD grades: after 1st Kup you get 1st Dan, and not "Zero Dan"...
