They are doing Capoera, which is a combination of Brazilian dance and the Portuguese version of the French Savatte, a combination itself of boxing and kicking. Today it is mostly used there for party and ceremonial dancing, but with some changes has become a "martial art." Do a search on your computer and you will find a number of sites about this strenuous practice. b ------------------------------ From: MissIllona@aol.com Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 17:10:03 EDT Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #491 In a message dated 10/10/99 10:05:38 AM Pacific Daylight Time,=20 the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << hello again, I was just wondering... in the movie Only the Strong what=20 type of brazilian martial art are they doing and if you have any info about=20 the martial art that would be great too. >> That would be the Brazilian martial art known as Capoeira. My first real instructor was Master Choi, John Jung. He is currently an 8th Dan Kukkiwon and the president of the USTU for Louisiana. I am still his student and go through him for promotions. My second instructor was GM Yi Won Ik, he is the founder of Tukong Moosul which is the official system of the ROK Special Forces. I have dabbled in Kajukembo as well as Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do and Combat Hapkido. I consider myself quite the amateur as far as any art goes. For those of you that are used to seeing my posts on another forum I'm glad to see you here and look forward to reading your posts. If any of you are close to Minot North Dakota, I'm currently training at the Golden Dragon Gym under Tim Inglebergt (I'm sure I spelled it wrong), come and train with us. It was capoeira. I don`t have too much info on the subject but type "capoeira" into any search engine and you should find some websites. Does anyone know > if these are good self defense martial arts. I also don't know if Combat Taekwondo is still around. However Combat Hapkido is an excellent method of self defense. It is a 90's version of Hapkido. It has taken the base of Hapkido as the focus point of its system and implemented various practical aspects from many other systems. Combat Hapkido has incorporated the basics of BJJ for fighting from the ground (although we don't believe this is a good place to be), also the trapping of JKD foundations has been incorporated as well. Overall Combat Hapkido is a practicle system of defense. I will not get into those arguments ever again. GM Pellegrini also advises students to learn as much as they can and decide for themselves what they wish to keep and what to throw away. Is this wrong? Debatable Instructors should avail to learn as much as possiblie since their students may be of various abilities. In Hapkido I feel there are not very many controling principle techniques (finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, leg, etc... ) With these main principles there are hundreds of variations on geting into these principles. I know of about 80 ways of getting into a simple elbow arm bar. I'm glad you had fun at Master West's seminar that is what it is about. I have an extremly good time at GM Pellegrini's seminars. That is the beauty of America you have choices.
