But are you willing to work for this? Or is this just some fantasy to become the next Texas Ranger? Martial arts is hard work and dedication. The right place will not let you breeze by. A belt will not just be given to you. You will earn it. Perhaps if you place ad in the local paper maybe someone in your town knows and can teach. Be careful of these too. Make sure he is on the level and will not cause some sort of bodily harm to you. We have one of those backyard ppl here. Word is getting around about him. I think he does not have many students left. However, in our school, we have spent time learning Hapkido techniques with an emphasis on self-defense, and have coordinated them with our TKD skills. We have also tried a few Tai Chi moves to balance ourselves before a workout. My instructor shares his dojang with one of the local Tai Chi instructors and supports his students taking those classes for self-improvement. Our grandmaster teaches Hapkido at his dojang; our benefit is that we get occasional mini-seminars in Hapkido from him or our instructor. We don't practice Hapkido to earn belt ranks in Hapkido; nor do we expect to become proficient in Tai Chi just through occasional mini-lessons. Studying more than one art can be possible or conflicting. depending upon one's approach. I believe that coordinating skills and keeping my sights on one black belt goal at a time works for me. Darlene 1st kup Port Hadlock, WA >> Darlene, I would certainly consult with my instructor before starting anything else, but that issue has not arisen yet. My former head instructor also practiced Brazilian JuJitsu. Before he left we had several sessions devoted to ground fighting and self defense. My school had also brought in a guest instructor for a Muay Thai seminar. So, we have been getting a little taste of what some other arts have to offer, but as I mentioned before, I think I will stick with TKD for now. That first black belt is actually within sight (next year hopefully). I will let you all know how my test goes next week. Alot of Hapkido people do teach forms today. The highest ranking student of the founder, GM Lim, Hyun Soo does teach some forms for practicing the various kicks and strikes in Hapkido. I know alot of people hate forms but they do have some vary bennificial aspects. The difficulty is in marketing and convincing those in charge of TV productions that the popularity is there and the money will follow. BTW, I DO NOT include the hokey shows that we've seen on PPV in the same category with popular TKD competition. But, if you ever get a chance to see the video of the '97 World Cup with Michael Weintraub doing the commentary, you'll see just how exciting real competition can be when it's presented well." Hello Sally, Maybe i should put it in a different way... do you think that more people watch boxing or tkd? or do you think more people participate in boxing than tkd. Where you said... "But, if you ever get a chance to see the video of the '97 World Cup with Michael Weintraub doing the commentary, you'll see just how exciting" That is my point... to see that video i would have to go out and buy it where as anyone who has a tv could turn on the boxing station and watch... which makes boxing have more people watching it. To tell you the truth i have never been to any tkd tournament so i do not a clue on how many people are in the audience so i cant say that there are more in at a boxing match... But i doubt that there are more than 10-20 thousand people at a tkd tourament. one and only, Kadin ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #506 ******************************** Support the USTU by joining today!
