Did you ever think to refuse the belt being given by your > instructor? As a matter of fact, yes. I wasn't thrilled with my performance on my 2nd Degree testing, and told the senior judge on the testing panel that I thought I deserved a no-change and specifically requested one. He told me later that he agreed with my assessment that I could have done better, but his decision to promote me was partially based on my request - he was very impressed with my integrity and felt that my request showed true spirit, which in his opinion mattered as much as, if not more, than technique. There wasn't much I could say to that! ------------------------------ From: Gregg London Date: Fri, 22 Oct 1999 19:58:29 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: Steve Silz Campaign Good Day, Most of you who know me know that I applaud any effort to "fix" things as opposed to merely complaining about them. I applauded Ronda Sweet when she fought for the USTU State President position in Oklahoma. And I now applaud Master Steven Silz for his tossing his "hat into the ring". I know Master Steve quite well, and I truly believe he will make an excellent Vice President. He has my unqualified support. I have been "lurking" on the digest for over two years and I am just getting to the point where I feel I can make useful contributions or let you all know what I'm up to. This list has been a great resource for me as I work on advancing my own MA skills and I wanted let you know I appreciate it. There were several eyewitnesses who swore that the big guy was loaded, hostile and mouthy. He began the matter by lunging towards my throat, which he very nearly missed getting a good grip upon. But there was one woman who was not even there at "the moment of truth," but swore that "That White dude [me] had been harassing the Brother (him) all night!" And that I had put some kind of Karate death-hold on "the Brother." (Remember, this was during the US Nationals when they were in Houston) By the way, four cops (HPD) responded; two Black, one Mexican and one White. And this nutty woman was screaming that the "cops was racist!" The cops apologized and told me that even if 500 honest witnesses saw the episode as I had explained it, and just one swore that I was the aggressor, they were obligated to take BOTH of us in. Which they did...putting me in the back of a van with him after removing his cuffs and shackles! I told them that this was dangerous to me and that I was afraid of riding with him unrestrained. Those humanitarian cops told me that he was too drunk to pose any threat to me but told me to "scream" if I was under attack! Anyhow, it turned out that by the time we got to the lockup the police had found that he had many outstanding warrants (no surprise there) and had to stay a while. The cops must then have realized that that woman was not being truthful after all and released me promptly -- but not until I had just missed my flight home. The Holiday Inn where it had occurred also comped my stay and sent me another $500 for not filing charges against their employee. The nutty woman, it turns out, was their "security officer." A word to the not so wise: Don't get into any fights even if you are 100% right. It, very likely, will turn into an ugly and expensive nightmare like my brief visit to Houston. During my testing for my yellow belt I tore up my knee and had some difficulty trying to complete my forms and in sparring. Much of that day is a blur to me. When I was sparring I did a great impression of being a semi-mobile punching bag while standing on one leg. I remember being angry, a calm cold type of anger due to pain and was determined to finish my forms. The panel would not allow me to finish and I did not know why at that time. When the oral portion of the test began I was only asked one question and it wasn't one I was expecting. My answer was "NO SIR!" I was dismissed from the floor again. At the end of this I was given my yellow belt. I did not understand why as I had not completed all the forms etc. that I was told I had to do to pass the testing. My instructor explained that the panel knew that I had learned and understood all I was required for the belt. I accepted receiving the belt then. I ingested some Tylenol 3, headed off to the hospital, found out what I did to my knee and took several weeks off from practice. When I started practicing again the master told me I was due for my next testing in two weeks. I told him there was no way I was ready. My instructor agreed with me. The master stated it was scheduled, like a school exam, and I had to be there. I went. I did not know the forms, the sparring techniques, the self defense techniques etc. that were required and basically stood there like an idiot. The oral part of the testing was OK though. They gave me the orange belt for "doing my best". I wanted to refuse that belt but I didn't because of intimidation, fear? and disgust. A week later I was with a different school. That orange belt is used to tie up my tomato stakes; that is all it is worth to me. That master has told me, and others, that I showed him great disrespect and dishonour for leaving his school. I feel that it was the only honourable thing I could do. Time to crawl into my corner again. I wasn't altogether pleased with my last test (for 1st kup) for several reasons: 1) I knew I should have practiced more, but didn't. 2) I still can't jump (even though my instructor constantly challenges we women to "prove the grandmaster wrong that 'women can't jump' ". 3) I was expecting to test at 1pm, arrived early to watch the 10am BB test, and was told I was testing with the BBs, so I was mentally surprised and not able to focus as well. (Not to mention I didn't have time to drink my V-8!) On the other hand, I did my form well enough (a couple of short hesitations, but good style), and my 3-step and free-sparring went well. However, my techniques-on-demand section had me all over the place. I felt like I was flailing about in my jump spinning roundhouse, and I swear I couldn't hear/comprehend the hand techniques I was told to do. I could do them OK, but I had brain freeze each time he said a new one, and had to think/look at my neighbor to figure out what to do. I get SOOO mad at myself when I can't process those commands and do them right the first time, like I can in class. > Did you ever take a test, >receive a belt but think that your performance was not up to par? >Did you ever think to refuse the belt being given by your >instructor? My instructor never recommends me for a test unless he knows I have the skill and knowledge to pass it. More than likely if I weren't ready, he and I would agree to wait a longer time before testing. He respects us enough to ask who would like to test around the same time as when he gives us a pre-test. I agree with David in that I wouldn't second guess my instructor in his decisions and recommendations. David wrote: >No, and I hope that I never do. Since ya cannot sleep because of the pain, you browse the internet for something to do. I found Ray's website in one of them. I also found a URL for you. http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/towers/8602/itf.html Have fun with it. I found one website that had my fans for cheaper than I bought them for. If it wasn't for my instructor insisting I buy them from our federation's store maybe I would of bought them here. I did order a couple of things. A rebreakable board and dit-da-jow. I have no time to make it from scratch and if it smells worse than making sourkraut, forget it.
