Training in Korea is generally faster and more frequent than in North America. 5 days a week is the norm for a minimum of an hour and a half. Six days a week is better. As can be expected a person rises in rank much faster as a result but do not associate this with being as good as someone who takes years to pass through ranks. There is much to be said for slow assimilation of the basics. I think the quality of teaching is higher and less is lost in transmission when studied froma native teacher but one doesn't have to necessarily come to Korea to find such a person. Living and working can play havoc with a training schedule and until one proves oneself to the master and is deemed appropriate for the position, the role of live-in student is not going to come quickly - if you even desire it after you make first dan. Jobs are reasonable easy to get in the field of teaching english and even some web-based jobs. They pay well even with the reduced value of the won. It is not easy for everyone to survive here though. The psychological stresses are intense and vary with so many factors I can't really describe them here but imagine a world where even the simplest things are not the same. Jokes are not funny, laughter doesn't mean what you think it does, teh toilets are... curious, the food is incendiary, you are the only foreigner for miles, you are illiterate... The list goes on and you must deal with it every single day. For me it is worth it but I can't study the art I study at home. In the MDK it is/was, white-pure, green-growing, blue-peaceful, red-dangerous. If recollection serves... Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "J. Dudley" Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 12:18:10 -0400 Subject: the_dojang: my last test, BB awarding Hello, all. Was I satisfied with my performance in my last test? Yes, considering. It was my 1st Dan 7th Gup test, yesterday. The thing that made my performance less than super was that 3 weeks ago I broke my right hand! (Not badly - a small bone chip in pinky finger/metacarpal, but I have a fiberglass cast up to my elbow. I have three fingers + thumb free to type. Cast comes off Friday, yay! It happened when I blocked a very fast kick, with closed fist. I consider it just bad luck. Had my hand been lower it could have been his toe instead of my finger). I went back to class but when it's free-sparring time I go sit down. So the test went okay. We all had to break, so I did a one-inch palm strike with my left hand. One of my two forms was Kum Do 6 cuts (not really a form, just showing 6 basic cuts). With my cast I couldn't move my wrist much, so the 6 cuts looked a little lame :-o Our black belt award ceremony was great. It was a tea ceremony. With gimpy hand I don't want to type a description of the whole thing, though. It was held at twilight, by candelight. We had to bring a loved one (could be special friend from class). During the ceremony, we each had a cup of tea, gave a small gift to the loved one we brought (most people brought flowers for this), and for each of us the grandmaster tied the new black belt around us. There were a lot of us, so it made a long evening, but I'll never forget it. What would be the best way for me to do this in my future?" I can really answer this question but I sort of wanted to ask the same thing... I am 15 like i have said before and i was thinking of doing some sort of foreign exchange program type thing. Say i went to china for the school year, would they even allow me to join a martial art class there? I have read that they feel it is a secret and only the chinese should be tought it but i think that was just along time ago. not sure. I could use some help :) one and only, kadin ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 24 Oct 1999 11:14:09 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: reminder Just a reminder...
