You have answered the question very admirably and in my opinion correctly. Tangible reward and a methid to gagby which to gage the students instruction and abilities. To add to this...Koreans like to express everything in terms of parables as well as Japanese and Chinese and other Asian cultures. Meanings for the colors of the belts were simply expressed as such in order to answer the always asked question...especially by Western World people..."What does the color mean?"...therefore the explanations given in the form of parables. As has been stated many times before...the color is whatever you wish to make it. Every instructor, every art, every style will have their own colors and their own meanings or relevance of each color. Don't be bogged down in the pursuit of trivial matters. Did you EARN your belt color?...Did you PAY for your belt color?...Does the color have meaning to YOU? Whatever your answer or your opinion....WEAR whatever color belt your instructor gives to you...it holds up your pants and keeps your top closed!!! Pil Seung K.G. It means you know the basics and have the skills to start teaching those basics to others. In our school, you are not a "master" until you are fourth dan. To all: How do your schools show the difference (if they show any) between the dan belts? (Other than all those weird colors & stripes someone mentioned.) We use color tape wrapped around the end of the belt for the 5 steps from first dan to second dan. The tape matches the kup belt colors for rank, e.g., green color strip on black belt = 1st dan, 6th kup. Our parent dojang uses embroidered gold bars at the end of the belt for dan ranks, but my TKD master (4th dan) only has his name embroidered in Korean, no level. What does your school do? I believe that in WTF TKD you need to be at least 5th or 6th (someone correct me on this, I forget) Dan before you are considered a Master. Earning your Black Belt is more akin to having graduated college. You know the basics but are a long way from being competent at your art. Steve Alexander Student of the Martial Arts. You have been given good basic's, but now the real work begins, if you want it. There is so much out there every style, every move , every thought. Do not be fooled by the black belt some of them are the best magician's. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 08:03:51 -0700 (PDT) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #535 ******************************** Support the USTU by joining today!
