Not chevrons, the upside down 'V', but diagonal gold stripes. There is a black belt on the wall in our display of belt ranks that has a red strip around the end. I am a little old Dan-Bo and I am not worried about it. As long as my belt turns black in the very near future (December is my test, knees shaking), I do not care if they sew little Barney the purple dinosaur patches on to signify rank. IIRC in the WTF, 5th Dan is Master, although that means that 4th is "Junior Master" and are sometimes addressed as "Master." When I was in the WTF my students started calling me "Master" which I was very uncomfortable with. In the ITF, "Master" is 7th and 8th Dan, "Grand Master" is 9th. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Steffen Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede steffend@lamar.colostate.edu Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi ------------------------------ From: "Silke Schulz" Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 15:44:52 -0700 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #535 Darlene wrote: >To all: > How do your schools show the difference (if they show any) between the >dan belts? I'm not sure whether or not I've introduced myself to this particular list yet, so please forgive me if I'm repeating myself. My name is Silke Schulz, and I'm a 2nd Dan in Taekwondo with the International Taekwondo Council. I just opened my own school in a small town in the California Desert. I having a grand time at it, too. I am still amazed that since I opened my doors on September 11, I've managed to amass nearly 30 students! However, to answer Darlene's question: our association uses gold-embroidered bars on the black belt to signify our Dan ranking. There aren't any stripes for the "in-between" periods. We do get a new belt at each new Dan, though. I think the colored tape is an interesting idea, and, IMHO, might make it a little easier to keep young black belts motivated in between the ever-increasing time-in-grade requirements at black belt. I received a rather nice mailing about it from ITC headquarters a month or so ago. Is there a big push to increase the ITC membership?
