Hi Dave, I'd don't claim to be an expert, but from what little I know the Kukkiwon indicates that the Taegeuk forms (1-8) must be known to obtain a 1st Dan. However, if the Master (w/appropriate Kukkiwon rank) says the student passed his/her 1st Dan test, then that is good enough for the Kukkiwon or the USTU. I have heard of WTF schools that do not teach the Taegeuks or the short lived Palgwes, e.g. some may teach the original Pyong Ahn forms, but I have never personally encountered one. There are even a few WTF schools that do not teach any forms at all. I'm mystified that anyone would believe that a 3-hour women's (or anyone else's;>) self-defense course that claimed to move beyond concepts into actual techniques could be of any real value, save as a promotion for more extended instruction. >> 1. It is an intro course to a continuing course we offer onsite. 2. It covers only 5 basic techniques that address numerous scenerios. 3. The key element of this course is to get the women to exert the strength and power that they have inside... but have been told from day one to bury beneath society's definition of feminity. It does not matter so much WHAT they do... as that they react with 100% of their power. Women have been defending themselves without intensive training since the dawn of creation. We just help them realize that it is ok to do so. You may not view this of any real value... but the women who have come back to us and told stories about how they prevented an assault or even fought off an attacker because our course helped them realize that they COULD is all the justification that we need to provide this service. That's it in a nutshell. Nothing mystical about it. If you see fit, please give him your support in any way possible. Ray Terry rterry@best.com - -------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Steven E. Silz Date of Birth: October 1, 1957 TKD Starting Date: September 2, 1976 Master: Sang Lee Greetings to my fellow taekwondo professionals. My name is Steven Silz and I am a candidate running for vice- president of our Union. I humbly ask you to take five minutes out of your day to read about who I am, what I have accomplished, and most importantly, what I would like to help you and our taekwondo community accomplish together. If you know my history and my plans I believe you will be glad to support me on election day. I have been involved in taekwondo continuously for twenty-four years. During this time I have progressed from beginning student to successful competitor, from assistant instructor to master of my own dojang which I have run for over eleven years. I have been a coach, have served as a referee, and was honored to serve as U.S. National Team Manager for the most recent World Taekwondo Championship. Currently, I am writing a book about the taekwondo movement in America. Here is a partial list of some of the things I would like you to know about me: 1. New York State Welterweight Champion, 1981, '82, '83 2. U.S. National Silver Medalist, 1983 3. 7 time International Goodwill Match competitor US, Mexico, Canada & Spain, 1981 through 1985 4. Empire State Games Event Coordinator and Gold Medalist, 1983, '84. 5. Exhibition member at 1986 World Cup Taekwondo, Colorado Springs, CO 6. Coach for OTC Resident Athletes 1987 Pan Am Team Trials 7. Opened Dojang US Taekwondo Center - San Diego 8. Elected Secretary General, California State Taekwondo Association 9. Produced famous "US Players" taekwondo video, 1991 10. Attended 10th World Championships, Athens Greece, to film the Official USTU video production of the event. 11. Attended 11th World TKD Championship, New York, NY, 1993 12. Hosted the 1994 California State Senior Championship in San Diego. 13. California State Taekwondo Team Head Coach, 1995 - '99 14. Hosted and Directed TKD portion of the California State Games, 1996 15. CSTA Presidential Advisor, 1997 - '99. 16. First Place in 1998 USTU National Kick-A-Thon raising $5,200.00. 17. Achieved 5th Dan, WTF and National Referee "B-1" rank, 1998 18. U.S. Team Manager, 14th World Taekwondo Championships, Edmonton Alberta, 1999. 19. Appointed Project Historian to research and write a book covering the USTU's 25 years of progress. I am a Life Member and 20 year supporter of the USTU with experience in many aspects of our art. I am seeking your vote to elect me to the office of Vice President where I pledge serve you and our membership with honor, integrity and innovation. Before I describe my visions for the future of our Union, I would like to briefly explain why I feel I am the best candidate for this job. It is actually very simple: According to the USTU's bylaws, the job of the three national vice presidents is primarily to assist the USTU President in the execution of his duties. Since I have been a student of, and assistant to, our president Sang Lee for twenty-four years, and due to the fact that I currently reside in Colorado Springs where I already work along side of him daily, I am, without any doubt, the most qualified candidate to fill this position. No other candidate has worked so closely for so long with President Lee, nor does any other candidate live the same city. Finally, the things I would work to make happen in the future are as follows: 1. Establish a national program to install taekwondo in America's public school system. Aside from being a wonderful program for the youth of this country, and provide an ideal grass-roots athlete development arena, this program would create numerous job opportunity's for instructors and would help fill our schools with those children wishing to practice taekwondo more seriously. 2. Develop a truly standardized curriculum and color-belt system for USTU schools. This would make our schools much more organized and advanced than all others. It would also make the pairing at tournaments simple and quick, and would be both less stressful and more fair to the competitors. 3. Develop a tournament management package that State Presidents' could use to run their state's events more smoothly, efficiently and profitably for their associations. 4. Pursue legislation that would require background checks and licensing of all martial art instructors in America. Put the phonies out of business and more people will come to our licensed and USTU Certified studios. 5. Work to assist the State Presidents' in achieving non- profit status and help them acquire corporate sponsorship for their state association. 6. Be accessible to State Presidents for to assist them in understanding and working within the USTU bylaws, and provide assistance in drafting of their state's bylaws, as well. ------------------------------ From: Brad Bezoni Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 19:57:52 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V6 #539 First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Brad Bezoni, and I am a 2nd dan (in the ATA we designate them as degrees), and have been training for 8 years now. Recently got back into TKD after a layoff to finish school and get work experience, but now I'm ready to rock and roll again! >Also, since it's an organization that is made up of ex-ATA'ers why no >Songahm hyung? From what I can tell the split with the ATA happened AFTER >Grandmaster Lee came up with his own hyungs. This is what I know of the infamous split (and I may be wrong on some things, so don't take this as gospel) - Grandmaster Lee made the Songham forms/katas/hyungs at the same time that he came up with the new color belt system for the ATA, and this is what led to the departure of some of the ATA instructors (especially some high ranks). It could be that if they left at the time of the color belt switch they may not have gotten to see these forms to start incorporating them. That and the fact that the ATA has actually copyrighted the forms, so it could just be that Grandmaster didn't see fit to allow the ITC to use the forms. I figure "I feel so great I might as >well push myself even harder!" I love hard training but one needs to know >one's limitations - especially if you're going to exceed them. Tell me about it! I came back about a month ago from a 2 year hiatus, and the first night back strained a hamstring... (you know, the "oh yeah, I know I still can kick that high and that fast" syndrome). I learned very quickly what my NEW limits were, and thankfully when to tell I'm about to exceed them. My best advice, when you think you are ready to come back full swing, give it another 2-3 weeks (I ended up pulling that same hamstring 2 1/2 weeks later from the initial strain - talk about pain!) Hope that you get well soon!
