It has been quite awhile, although many people still think they need to do taegueks. Actually since so few referees know the palgues, the competitors who do palgues usually end up scoring higher than those who do taeguek - weird but true Ok....thank you for the time reference....however, I must tell you that last year was the first I had heard of the Palgwes being allowed at the state level...A master instructor in the USTU...and I am sure he was playing it safe for his student...was asked by his student if he should do a Palgwe...the Master Instructor told him he could but to hold off and do the Tae Guek to be on the safe side. And if memory serves me correctly, at the same tournament, one student performed a Palgwe and was given a straight score of five because it wasn't a Tae Guek...unfortunately that had to happen because I think they should both be allowed...so I thank you for keeping me up to date with this... and if you check into the history....you will find it was the WTF in > South Korea that opposed the push for the Olympic Sport, when it was first > being pushed, because they felt it deviated from the traditional art and > compromised it...it took years to convince them otherwise... Ummmm, are you sure about that? Any cites/references you can point us to? Actually...I am NOT sure about it...I am only going on word of mouth on this topic...I really can't offer any verification....that's why I suggested checking into the history...though that was not made clear in re-reading my comment...SO if ANYONE can offer some clarification on this ..I would certainly appreciate it. Thank you. With all due respect for misleading anyone ...was not intentional...very sorry! The One and Only... And can you tell me a little more about what you do that works? >> Well, Silke, you are in a small town ... so I would check with the newspaper and see if they will let you insert flyers in their paper there. Flyers in newspapers that fall out when they open them ... have always worked better for me than a regular ad in there. How 'bout paying someone to put door hangers on doornobs out there? Or does everyone have big dogs and fences around their houses? Out here that doesn't work well, as this is Rottweiler country ! :-) Or set up a table at the local supermarket in the daytime and hand out flyers there and have people sign up for a week's free lessons (or month in your case if that is your special) ... get to know the neighborhood and everyone in it. Then go from shop to shop with your business cards (and purchase a bunch of cheap business card holders) and ask them if they will allow you to put it on the counter there along with some flyers and you would be glad to do the same for them. If you do want to do door hangers ... try to go in with one of the merchants there and have the printshop print them double sided ... one for you and one side for the other merchant and then split the bill in half. Ask them to recommend your school when they come in for their special and you will do the same for them when they come into your school if they respond to the door hanger. Have you got a cool looking graphic on your window or windows there? I have an address of a great site that sells these to martial arts schools and they made one for me with a black belt lady on it with 2 kids and I have it on my window and it draws people in here. But they have other graphics to pick to put on the window. They are removeable so you can alternate them so people don't get used to seeing the same ol' thing and pass you by ... got to change it every month or so. Also put your special on your window ... so that will entice them to stop and take a look in. Either do it yourself with poster paint or pay a professional to do it (always make your place look good ... not amateurish) ... check around the area and if you see a good poster paint job ... go inside and ask who did it and if they have their phone #. That is how I got it last time when I saw a cool one that he did. Really bright, can't miss colors and I just had to have one on my front window and he even drew a couple of karate kids too for me. LOL. Can't think of anything more unless you want to do something inside with your students so they will recommend your school to others. How many students do you have? Some kind of contest ... win a Samurai Sword set or a WaveMaster ... the one who brings in the most people to try out the school type of contest is always fun to do ... but make sure you give out 2nd and 3rd and possibly 4th place things too. Ever done one like that before? I am located in Hesperia. Good luck ! Wish I had a Jiujitsu man here ... you lucky person you !! Does anyone know if these happen in Korea? There are PLENTY of poomse competitions in Europe. Even the European Championships. There are also poomse competitions in Korea (a friend of mine attended a children poomse championships in Seoul). There is also a big tournament called Hanmadang held in breaking, self-defense, traditional and creative poomse every year in Korea. If you need any specific info on poomse competitions you can email me privately. So, oddly enough, in the U.K., Hwang > Kee's Soo Bahk Do Federation can't use the words "Moo Duk Kwan" on their > patches. . . Well, we do. But, it is possible that we could be sued for doing so. There was a farcical race a number of years ago to claim copyright in the UK for the name 'Tang Soo (Soo Bahk) Do Moo Duk Kwan'. This was eventually won by Lee Kang Uk after he had split from Hwang Kee. The important bit is 'Moo Duk Kwan' and to people who know what this means it does rather rankle to think that the name does not legally belong to us... Soo Bahk! We do so much cross-training that you would run out of space on the belt. Do you put the hash marks for tkd on one side and hkd on the other? What if you study a third art? We tend to just put the name on one side, and then "innae" (perseverance) on the other. That way you also get students out of the belt mania mentality a bit. It will certainly push adherence to the Tenets of Tae Kwon Do to the limits.” While I understand the reasons you give, I still disagree with you about them. I don’t see that the intense training or social interface with competitors will necessarily make it difficult to behave well. I do believe that, especially at the higher levels of competition, you’ll find people who have followed the tenets more closely than most because the the tenets embody many of the same qualities that are necessary to reach the higher levels of competition. << I have attended many USTU events and not all competitors adhere to the Tenets...it is rather disgraceful to see unsportsman-like conduct as well as lack of respect for other Martial Artists...they may have the skills and the stamina but lack in courtesy, integrity, and self control. >> IMO, it is disgraceful to see unsportsman-like conduct and lack of respect at any competition, no matter where you find it. I don’t believe USTU events have a corner on this kind of behavior; in fact, since you can be disqualified for it in USTU events, I’ve seen less of it in our events than in the Karate and Open competitions I’ve attended. I cannot speak for TKD events that are other than USTU, as we’ve not had any advertised in our area in the last several years. << I did not say that hand techniques were unheard of...I simply stated they are ALMOST unheard of... >> “Hand techniques are almost unheard of, unless you have the technique, know-how, and stamina to move your opponents body with one punch.” I guess we can agree here that hand techniques are not going to be scored very often in competition. It isn’t that the techniques aren’t used -- they are, and can be brutal (I know of young girls who can bruise an opponent’s chest even through a hogu), and can certainly cause an opponent to think twice about closing with you -- just that they are rarely awarded points. << I happen to personally know of two such individuals...and they train continuously...they have been for years to try make it in the 2000 Olympic games >> Will you share their names with us? Did they compete in Colorado Springs last year? I think most of us are interested in who will be competing at the Olympic Qualifier in January. Will they be attending there? If you can give them encouragement, please do so, for you are very correct about the difficult path. << Well....perhaps...but the Grand Masters that I have the pleasure of knowing and training under, form the WTF, and ITF, all contact the Olympic Committee in Colorado when they have students wishing to compete at that level...but I could be mistaken... >> I suspect that they contact the USTU in Colorado Springs, which has offices in the Olympic Training Center. As you may imagine, the Olympic Committee has much more to deal with than just Taekwondo. My guess would also be that if someone contacted the Olympic Committee, they would be referred to the USTU. << Question for you Sally...why all the adversarial comments?...trying to prove a point?...don't read more than what's written... >> No, not trying to prove a point... trying to make sure the information is relatively correct with respect to Kukkiwon Taekwondo and USTU competitions. It’s been my experience that, as a rule, a non-Kukkiwon taekwondoin usually has a long ax to grind with USTU and the WTF. If that isn’t/wasn’t the case with you, I apologize for seeming to be adversarial.
