Hi, I was just wondering if anyone out there could give me some advice or something for a friend of mine. She was training the other night and landed on her foot wrong and ended up breaking it! She is now in a cast for 8-10 weeks and will probably be out of karate until Febuary. Any encouraging words or stories or poems would greatly be appreciated. I cannot begin to imagine how she feels and I don't know if any of you can but if you could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it! Also any advice on how she could still maybe keep fit or antyhing would also be very valuable! Now THAT is interesting. When I look at that, I don't see how the 180 degree pivot _before_ the leg extension could be more powerful IF the people who are pivoting 90 degrees before the leg extension make sure they put the hip and body movement into the extension, thus giving the rest of the body turn. (Ending the body at 180 degrees.) Hmm. How about I say that clearer? The way we do it: The body turns 90 degree as we chamber (and we do the straight up chamber, as opposed to the front kick chamber), then, as the leg is extended, the kicker turns their hip into the kick, causing the body weight to be behind the kick, pivoting the body the additional 90 degrees giving the kicker a 180 degree orientation to the target at the moment of impact. This puts the weight of the attacker behind the kick, without the kicker having to push beyond their balance point. (Note: as the hip extends, the pivot occurs on the ball of the foot. If you pivot on the heel, not only will your balance be terrible, but the hip rotation would move the body weight behind the kick.) If you pivot all the way, then simply extend your leg, aren't you deliberately cutting yourself off from much of the power available to this form of kick? I do agree that if someone only pivots 90 degree during the chamber, then moves no more through the leg extension, they will have less power than a fuller turn. However, after the chamber, there should be a hip extension that puts the body weight into the kick, IMO. Due to the time restraints of work/school/other I have not really had the time to write intellegent answers. Enough about that, no one cares. My Question springs from a discussion that took place in my school the other night. When executing a side piercing kick striking with the foot sword, the foot on the ground is "supposed" to be at a ninty degree angle from the target. Point of view one: As long as you are pivoting when you kick and strike with the foot sword then it is acceptable for the foot on the ground to pivot more then 90 degrees. Even a pivot as large as 150 degrees. Some people have to pivot more due to different flexabilities. Point of view two: If the foot on the ground pivots more then the 90 degrees, it is no longer a side piercing kick but rather a thrust kick. Even if you strike with the foot sword (side) and not the heel (thrust). There seems to be a valid argument for both sides of the issue. I was wondering what opinions were out there. Jonathan S. Especially for breaking boards we teach the traditional side kick, roundhouse kick... as it has more power and there is no need to use the fighting version instead. I would not recommend using a short and fast (fighting-orientated) side kick during a belt test for poomse, kyok pa or traditional basics. With a short side kick you might fail breaking board(s). Furthermore, I think, it should be everybody`s goal to learn both traditional and modern versions to complete your (understanding of) techniques. Its also part of the asthetic of a form to do a traditional kick. The fighting version: We teach opening frontal kicking techniques by putting the knee frontal up because: - -the protects from opponents attacks - -it does not show your attacking technique to the opponent - -it offers several possibilities to choose from: Push-, Axe-, Frontal kicks etc - -its much faster - -its more easier to choose between faking and kicking Greetings from Germany Axl ------------------------------ From: JEREMYT@ATFI.COM (JeremyT) Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 08:20:06 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Important Information Bubble Boy Virus I just received this and thought that I should pass it on. Keep your eyes opened for this one. Jeremy MACS Hello.... The VBS/Bubbleboy is a NEW virus that is listed as LOW risk for now...you do not have to open the attachment to be infected...you only have to view it!!! The following information is taken from the Mcafee site at: http://www.mcafee.com/viruses/bubbleboy/ Users of Outlook or Outlook Express are most vulnerable to this virus...please take steps to protect yourselves NOW! VBS/Bubbleboy Help Center VBS/Bubbleboy is a new Internet worm, discovered 11/08/99. AVERT has assigned it a LOW risk assessment; it has not appeared in the wild. VBS/Bubbleboy is a NEW type of worm: Unlike previous worms transmitted through email, this new type of worm does not come as an executable attachment. Instead, VBS/Bubbleboy infects PCs as soon as the transmitting email message is opened. This is a VERY significant innovation! Virus researchers have long assured the public that it is not possible to contract a virus or worm merely by opening and reading an email message. This is no longer true, and VBS/Bubbleboy marks the beginning of a more dangerous computing environment. VBS/Bubbleboy is transmitted through an email message with the subject heading "Bubbleboy is back!" It will ONLY infect PCs running Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook or Outlook Express. PCs using Outlook are infected upon opening the email message, while Outlook Express users may be infected by viewing the message with Outlook's "Preview Pane" feature! When the email is opened, the worm creates a file called UPDATE.HTA. The next time the PC is booted up, the worm sends itself embedded in an email to EVERY address in EVERY MS Outlook address book on the local system. It does this only once. Scan Now and ActiveShield have been updated to detect VBS/Bubbleboy. If the worm is detected before it has sent itself to your address book contacts, you should find and delete the file UPDATE.HTA. If the worm has already sent itself to your contacts, you should do nothing; the worm will not do anything further, and your PC is now effectively inoculated against re-infection. To protect your system against infection, disable Windows Scripting Host by following these steps: Click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel, then select Add/Remove Programs, then select the Windows Setup tab, then double-click Accessories, scroll down to Windows Scripting Host, and uncheck the box. Save changes and close the window. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 06:40:56 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V6 #563 ******************************** Support the USTU by joining today!
