She was training the other night and landed \ on her foot wrong and ended up breaking it! She is now in a cast for 8-10 \ weeks and will probably be out of karate until Febuary. Any encouraging \ words or stories or poems would greatly be appreciated. I cannot begin to \ imagine how she feels and I don't know if any of you can but if you could \ help me with this I would greatly appreciate it! Also any advice on how she \ could still maybe keep fit or antyhing would also be very valuable! Thank \ you in advance! Well, first, just letting her know that you care about her will go a long way toward helping her recover :) She can still go to class and watch. I've had to do this a few times. Even though I wasn't able to participate, I learned a *lot*. She should be able to work on hand strikes/techniques. There've been times in the Dojang I attend when a person with a strained/sprained leg/knee has been sat down across from another student and given wrist locks to work on. Since she's in Karate she could work on her hand strikes and blocks. Hope that helps. - -David Buehrer 6th Gup, Hapkido http://home.att.net/~Graht/Hapkido/Hapkido.htm - -- "Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday ... and all is well." ------------------------------ From: "tink" Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 18:09:26 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Responses TO: GIJo Got some advice for your friend...A student of mine broke her foot (on my elbow...but that's another story)...once she got her walking cast on she came back to class and did what she could...and she sparred every chance she got...she was just limited in her techniques...but she continued because she wanted to...her foot healed just fine...no problems. Tell your friend she can do the same thing if she has the desire. To Thomas: make sure they put the hip and body movement into the extension, These are the key words...MAKE SURE...Majority of the students I see only using the 90 Degree turn DON'T use their hip...They seem more concerned about speed than power or technique...as a matter of fact, Many of them keep their upper bodies facing forward while trying to throw a round-house kick...quite awkward and very ineffectual...but fast...the kick looks more like a cross between a front kick and a round-house...BUT...I agree...if you MAKE SURE to use the hip and body movement, you can effectively enhance the power...IMO...HOWEVER, for the previously stated reasons and because I am more focused on the technique for forms, I teach the full 180 degree round-house while teaching the 90 degree as an alternate for speed in sparring and defense. One of my training methods is to hold the knee up like a front kick, then perform a front kick, round-house kick, and side kick without moving the knee position...only pivoting on the foot as you throw the turning kicks and pivoting the hips and upper body for direction and power...as you chamber the kick...don't move the knee, just chamber the kick from the knee...return to a front stance with the knee still up after the side kick... TO: Jonathan S. Jozokos In all my turning kicks I practice and teach pivoting on the ball of the foot and point the heel at the target...regardless if I am use the blade of the foot or the heel...I find that the added twist of pointing the heel at the target, as I was instructed, adds power since the hip is put into the kick and further extension to drive the kick through...Pointing the heel at the target also aligns your body for maximum results and less exposure of the upper body...I also find that if I don't point the heel at the target, my knee takes some of the strain in a lateral vector...This knee strain is eliminated by pivoting the foot 180 degrees of the ball and pointing the heel at the target...try it both ways and see if you notice a difference...in the end...do what works best for YOU! TO: Illona Gymnastics have never been allowed in TKD tourneys to my knowledge and I have never attended a TKD tourney that allowed it...The closest I ever came to seeing gymnastics in a tourney was at an Open Tournament where a Kung Fu Instructor performed a Drunken Monkey pattern and did a pantomime of a drunken person defending themselves...I find Open tourneys very challenging and educational...though, there does seem to be more politics played in judging...but, to my dismay...there is also the same politics played at TKD tourneys...though maybe not to the same extent...Judges are SUPPOSE to look for focus, power, execution of technique, balance, and flow of forms...not whether or not they know the form or the art style...however...doesn't always work that way...as long as you know that going into it...you should have no expectations...don't let the politics deter you...continue to attend as many tourneys as you can...the experience is very valuable to your training.
