My fault. Yes you are correct, the TAGB does ITF Style, but according to the TAGB books is member of the BTC (British TaeKwon Do Council). I'm not sure about the Taekwon-Do International link but I do know that Dave Oliver is the TAGB Chariman - he also performs most of our gradings. Best I speak to my instructors to get the low-down. I'm sorry to say I don't know Mr Schembri or Mr Shepard, but I'll pass on your regards when I meet them. Don't suppose you know David Stitt or Lara Kennard do you? (my instructors). Watching the kwanjang-nim cajole and coax her into joining the dojang, listening to her goals progress from single techniques to ranks, watching her achieve those goals with hard work and confidence has been an education for us both. I can't wait to see what lies ahead for us. Anthony Boyd - Swordsman and Teacher http://victorian.fortunecity.com/operatic/739 ICQ# 45348443 ------------------------------ From: "John A. Cook" Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 16:19:11 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: re: one-steps, etc. My first post... 1. My name is John Cook, I'm a 2nd gup red belt in Middletown, DE, but my teacher is in Springfield, MO (yes, Master Fred Johnson is worth staying with - more on that later...I'm one of the few loyal ones left, from reading this digest...). I am recently getting back into the swing of things after a 12 - 13 year lay off (military, new family, stupidity, etc.). I briefly attended various schools while in the Navy as I moved around. I'm back because I realized I am a martial artist, no matter where I am and what else I am doing. More on that later, too. 2. My master's curriculum (based on ITF stuff) has five "textbook" one-steps for each rank, starting at green belt (5th gup). Three-steps at 7th gup, two-steps at 6th gup. Anyway, there is a great deal of emphasis on doing these with good form, timing and especially distance. At 4th gup and above, we must make up our own combinations and prove (demonstrate that we ourselves, at least, believe in them) that they work - and work fast! The attacker still uses the traditional center punch, but that punch can be feinted, rushed, whatever. We have pretty formal self-defense training - that's where the creative attacks can be seen, and it usually ends up looking like one-steps practice after all. At the one and only other dojang I've seen one-steps practiced, the students basically fluffed through them; just did them by rote. 3. WTF type sparring: I studied for a while in Campbell, Ca at a WTF (don't know any difference between WTF and Kukki-WTF sparring) school. There, I discovered how the TKD techniques that I learned and loved had been modernized (yuk), and discovered that people are trained to fight without hand techniques to the face. I understand wanting to "sportify" things, but it seemed such an injustice! I was constantly admonished for illegal use of hands (instinct, you know), but the real problem was that my punch or ridge-hand or whatever was out and long back before they had ANY reaction! 4. I hope to not offend anyone. There are martial artists and karate "players". As I said, I am a martial artist; the MA's is/are a very serious subject for me. I do EVERYTHING with a martial view: dead serious, the best that I can. Someone mentioned awhile back about separating the martial arts and religion. I guess when you are new, that could be the case. Or, if you're in MA just for the common reasons like self defense or exercise or the sport of it. But, I submit this: if you're in MA up to your soul, even drinking a glass of water makes you aware of how healthy you are and how great you can kick, and you could no more "quit" than cut off your cheeks, then I'll bet you're not just a "player", and there is at least a little religion involved. The Lord knows, there is for me! http://www.CookComputing.net http://www.CookComputing.net/personal ICQ: 2507859 AOL IM: JohnACookComp ------------------------------ From: d g Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 16:19:20 -0800 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Bullies From: Tkdtiger@aol.com Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 08:20:52 EST Subject: the_dojang: bullies > Donna - > > As we all have dealt with this person (to use the word loosely), I think it is not so much of not standing up > to a bully as frankly being a waste of time and energy - ignore him - it pisses him off more. > > Oh yeah, I agree with you there. All I ever got was a headache. Both of us bound and determined to get the last word. Heck, I argued with him more than I do my husband. It does show me something though.. My instructor and I are a lot alike in ways we stand up to our seniors when we feel something is not right. If I am going to have to deal with them, I am going to have to figure out more gentle ways to do it. I do not need to start unnecessary trouble on myself if I keep on telling ppl off. Glenn has someone to answer to and so do I. The ignoring part makes me wonder, he told me to tell you guys to leave him alone. If he wants us to leave him alone so bad, why does he keep on fanning the flames?
