Anyway, the REAL reason I wanted to babble here: What folows is an article I wrote one day when a different set of people were havinga disucssion about what the term "black belt" means. Just some thoughts, let me know what you all think. >> First let me say that this is one of the most well written articles I have read on Black Belts and their meaning. I believe you hit the nail squarely on the head on all points. Martial Art isn't just for the physically superior. It's for all of us. I also believe any art is not 100% physical. There is a mental side to every art form. Hey, before I started doing taekwondo I couldn't stand up in front of a group of people and talk. Now it's second nature. Before taekwondo I didn't associate well with little kids, I always felt uncomfortable. This too is no longer a problem. Now I will agree both of these items are a very important part of being an instructor! I have been under my instructor for 7.5 years and outside my family I am closest to them. Granted not everyone will have an instructor-student relationship like this.. but at all times.. even at his house for a BBQ..it's "Yes Sir" to him and "Yes maam" to his wife. Because that's one of the ways I was taught to show respect to my instructors and I pass my respect on to my students. If I don't give it, I shouldn't expect it. Happy Holidays! Martial arts are for the training and improvement of spirit, mind and body. There must be some minimum requirement against which we measure rank progression. However, the mental and spiritual growth are much harder to deal with. I try to make my advanced level tests very demanding physically and emotionally to test each student's confidence, commitment, determination and self control. I also tend to concentrate on individual areas where I know each student is weakest in advanced gup tests. I have seen far to many students testing that could pass the physical test on a good day, but probably were marginal most times and would clearly fail on a bad day. I tend to think of it as rank following the person rather than the person stretching for rank. After all, our rank shouldn't be based on what we can do on a great day, but on what we can do on any day, probably our worst day. I would hope that the young lady's family, while disappointed FOR her, would be bursting with pride that she got out there and put it all on the line. I was told once that when the occasional student at our dojang doesn't pass a test, a notation is made on the test form: "Next Time". A positive outlook, I think. It says that you didn't do it this time, but with work, you will.
