Stan ------------------------------ From: "Johnson, Garrett" Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 16:30:54 -0000 Subject: the_dojang: gup vs bb vs life I studied a form of Ishin-Ryu in college for a couple of years at which point an injury sidelined me for some time (I threw a side kick higher than I should have, or at least higher than I was warmed up for). I wound up getting caught up in my job after college and didn't go back until recently (I avoid counting how many years to avoid depression during the holidays). What was instilled in me years earlier by running cross-country, track, and distance racing as well as the karate I took in college was that goals are important but they are not destinations as much as milestones along the way. Running a 5 minute mile was a goal that I reached but not once did I think it was the fastest I wanted to run (of course now I would take just one more of those!). Black Belt is a goal to focus on but not my destination. A belt-less system would require some other similar means of measurement to allow competition and/or provide milestones along the way (not everyone studies to compete with others, I probably will but it's not "the point" of my training). Years of training might help but I suspect uniforms with numbers on the sleeve might not go over quite as well and wouldn't make any statement about how much effort and talent went into each year. The dan system "works" and someone that wants to stop at 1st dan may be as truly interested in martial arts as the person who finishes their 1st 10k or marathon and says "great, now I can cross that one off my to-do list". Or they may be interested in trying as many different things in life as possible and since you can't have everything and you certainly can't have it all at once, that's OK too. Whenever I see my 10-year old daughter frustrated because she does not get tested for a stripe or a belt during a given class (you can tell by the one word answers and droopy shoulders on the way home) we have "our little chat" where I ask her if she plans on stopping her martial arts study the day after she reaches black belt. Her response is always "no way!" and usually, "I want to get my 4th or 5th degree and teach it and study other styles too!" (enthusiasm is so easy at 10, it's another "art" I try to study where she and her sister are the "masters"). She is learning about life and so am I. Even if black belt looks like "the end" to her from time to time, when questioned...it's still a bend in the road in her 10-year old philosophy of life. (Please, no wise cracks about the fact that she hasn't hit the "teen-age" years yet. Like I said earlier, I avoid depression during the holidays...) Garry Johnson Martial Arts student (recently passed the green belt "signpost" on the vacation called life) and still runnin' after all these years... ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 10:04:24 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: new list Forwarding.
