The ATA has developed a complete set of videos for the colored belt material to serve as an adjunct to Grand Master Lee's Encyclopedia, _The Way of Traditional Taekwondo_. Each rank has all the required techniques, form and one-steps demonstrated by a high-ranking senior in the ATA. ------------------------------ From: "Paul Rogers" Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 20:31:47 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Hapkido Hoshinsul I, too, appreciated this video. I agree with the sentiments expressed by others in their reviews of Mr. Burrese's video. The only suggestion I would make in a future video would be to more clearly show the quick little wrist escape. I had a hard time seeing exactly how that maneuver worked. The rest of the video was great. Nice job! Each video showed all the requirements for the belt, including kicks, forms, one-step sparring and other testing requirements. My cousin gave me a couple of the videos a few years back, but I've never had the time to watch them. :-) Stan Lim TKD, San Jose, CA ------------------------------ From: "Paul Rogers" Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 21:20:53 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Martial arts videos? > From: Ray Terry > On the topic of videos, how many of your schools have different videos > for the new material to be learned at each belt level? i.e., does your > instructor have a set of videos, perhaps one per belt level, that shows the > poomse, kicks, one-steps, hoshinsul, etc that you'll be learning at that > gup level? I've been with the precarious sorts earlier in life. Then I found out what it was like to have true friends... the kind that put blood relatives to shame because they would stand there at your side and face death himself if he walked through the door looking for you. Granted... I can only count those friends on one hand. But give me 3 of those over an army of "questionables" any day. Any warrior needs someone to watch his/her 6:00. Recently I picked them up again. My biggest problem has not been with learning how to swing them, but rather with getting bored swinging them. I have a few Kata I have attained from time to time mostly from Chinese Arts. I have never practiced many of these since they don't seem to appeal to me. I have created 1 Kata that "feels right" for me. I have incorporated stances/kicks/blocks from my TKD studies. I would be happy to put ths Kata down on a website with photos and explanations if anyone had any interest in it. > From: P69H@aol.com > Date: Fri, 24 Dec 1999 15:52:45 EST > Subject: the_dojang: nunchakus > > Can anyone direct me to any sites about nunchakus > history, katas, anything? > thank you > Paul Hissa > A+ Karate - -- Dan Myers S.I.S. I also want to let everyone know about the Dojang's experience so that we might all learn from this experience. Yesterday evening at the Dojang we sat around in a circle and talked about our feelings about Emily's death, shared memories of Emily, and tried to create something positive from the event. It was very cleansing to be able to talk amongst ourselves. All of us were surprised at how much Emily's death had affected us. Each of us felt like a piece of us had been taken away. Through discussion it became clear that the Dojang was a family in our hearts, if not in our minds. Through the trust required to receive and give instruction and perform life threatening techniques with fellow students (and for other reasons that weren't entirely clear to us), we had let Emily, and each other, into our hearts. Emily's death taught us that we are a family, and the value of that family. A few of the instructors expressed their respect for Emily. She had, in their eyes, turned that first undefinable corner in Martial Arts. They knew that she had crossed the point at which most students drop out. She was on the path to becoming a high belt. The instructors also talked about what a joy it was to teach Emily. She was patient, and rarely became frustrated, instead seeking to find out why she couldn't perform a given technique. But the instructors also conceded that their investment in Emily didn't begin until she had turned that corner. They expressed that they were grateful for the amount of time they had spent with Emily, but were regretful that they hadn't invested time in her from her first class. The instructors conceded that they didn't truly open up to a student until it became apparent that they student was committed to martial arts. Many of the instructors changed their philosophy and are committed to investing in new students from day one. The memories of Emily were all the same. She always brought a smile to class. It was a challenge to work with her because she was very limber, naturally gifted, and had a high tolerance to pain. She was a member of the family. She will be missed, but she will always be in our hearts. Here are links to the latest news articles. Few details of the investigation are coming to light. It would appear that the case is very complex, and that investigators are having a hard time putting it all together. http://www.denverpost.com/news/news0105e.htm http://www.insidedenver.com/news/0105slay1.shtml To Life, - -David Buehrer 6th Gup, Hapkido http://www.users.uswest.net/~abaker3 - -- "The light is reached not by turning back from the darkness, but by going through it." ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 07:18:16 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: . ------------------------------ End of The_Dojang-Digest V7 #7 ****************************** It's a great day for Taekwondo!
