This is actually a huge amount of progress for him. Because ADD kids lack the ability to attend to one thing in the presence of distractions, I suggested to his mother that he come see me for a no charge private lesson, and then politely requested that she also leave so that he would have nothing to distract his attention from what I was teaching him. And do you know what? He's learned the material!!! And not only that, now in class when he's having difficulty remembering, he stops to think! While this may seem to only be a small step for us, it has been a HUGE one for him. >> Yes, I have one and he has been to 3 other karate schools before he came to mine. None could get him passed White Belt level. Said it was impossible. Have the parents (or you could do it) video tape the one-steps and the form ... so they can practice it at home. That is what we did for the young man here. I also worked and worked with him and he was made to understand that he was just as good as everyone else in the room ... but that everyone progresses at different times. He may not go up with the group he came in with ... but he would be moving up. I gave him visual aids to help him. If he learned a one-step ... he got a stripe on his belt. Second one-step ... second stripe on his belt. Same with the form. I split all the forms up into 5 sections. Stripes for each section learned. And guess what. He learned them all and he passed to Yellow Belt level ... then to Orange ... and now he is a Green Belt. And what he has learned in here on how to take things in stages with a big pat on the back for doing so ... he has also applied to his learning in school. Don't expect them to keep up with others ... that is too much pressure on them. Each student should be doing their own level of training ... with no pressure to stick to any group. At least this is how we do it here. The new learning he is doing here now is me having him work with different instructors instead of always me. He needs to learn to pay attention and focus on another person training him. He has come to depend on me and only me teaching him and he needs to learn how to learn from other teachers ... so when he gets into Junior High School he can adapt to having more than one teacher there too. Thus far Donna, Jesse, and Jaz have indicated that they would signup for an undigested / non-digestified version of the list were that option available. Anyone else? Please send me an email at the below address if you'd like that. Thanks. He'll be going to Dr. Kimm's on the 13th for the seminar and birthday celebration for Dr. Kimm. Are you going to be able make it to this event? If so, I look forward to meeting you there. I hope everyone on the list takes advantage of any opportunity to train with GM Ji. It is truly an eye opening experience for all those who have trained with other Hapkido Masters or Grandmasters. If you don't, you are missing an opportunity of a lifetime. His technique is the best in the world. If you don't believe me, see for yourself. How would you, as an instructor, handle this situation? >>One thing I'd personally recommend is to check out Sang H. Kim's book, >>Teaching Difficult Children. A URL with a good writeup of it is: I have had a few and still currently have one ADD student. They are not 'difficult children' - they just are VERY active - the difficulty is keeping them in the class long term, hence the 'I have had' The key thing is not to make a special case, but observe them and learn their strengths and weaknesses as you would any other student. And then adjust your approach accordingly. I certainly have learnt a lot from having these students in my class. An interesting point is that I didn't even know one particular young lady had ADD until their parent let it slip ! So I would suggest you do not make any prejudgement, and take them as they come !
