However, it has been my experience that most kids don't really want to practice under their parents' tutelage...they prefer a more disinterested party. >>That is what we did for the young man here. I also worked and worked with him and he was made to understand that he was just as good as everyone else in the room ... but that everyone progresses at different times. He may not go up with the group he came in with ... but he would be moving up.<< I have stressed this to all my students, including the adults. Martial arts is an individual journey, and we all travel the path at our own speed. >>I gave him visual aids to help him. If he learned a one-step ... he got a stripe on his belt. Second one-step ... second stripe on his belt. Same with the form. I split all the forms up into 5 sections. Stripes for each section learned.<< I give out stripes, too. This is useful in motivating all of the kids to progress toward the next rank level (and though the adult students may be unwilling to admit it, those stripes are important to them, too). (snip) >>The new learning he is doing here now is me having him work with different instructors instead of always me. He needs to learn to pay attention and focus on another person training him. He has come to depend on me and only me teaching him and he needs to learn how to learn from other teachers ... so when he gets into Junior High School he can adapt to having more than one teacher there too. << Yes, I agree this is likely to become a problem later on. Unfortunately, I have only been open for four months and have not yet had to time to "breed" my own instructors, so this is a problem I'll have to deal with much later. As always, your insights are much appreciated!! I'm sure most, if not all, of us do a little soul searching when an incident like Emily's comes to our attention - if not, we should. And, your questions were all valid. As long as there are humans interacting, we cannot be 100% sure of our safety - that doesn't mean we have to be 100% paranoid either. We have to do the best we can with our training to minimize our risks and always be cognizant that if someone wants to get us bad enough, they can :( You usually won't go too far wrong if you trust your instincts. GM Ji will conduct a seminar in the afternoon/evening of the 14th (Friday) at Dr. Kimm's dojang (I think). Saturday, Dr. Kimm will have a seminar at his school from 1000-1500 ???? Sorry, not sure of the times. Then that evening will be Dr. Kimm's 60th birthday celebration at a local restaurant. Sorry I don't have more about the event. GM Ji told me to come, I think so he can give me pain and have somebody he's used to throwing. In any case, I'm sure it will be a good time, and a time to see some old friends and make new friends. Choi. And I suppose I shouldn't let digs like "I guess you just can't please some people" bother me - but it is my Grandmaster. It should also be known that GM Hwang Kee suffered persecution for maintaining his right to keep his art distinct and won out in the Korean Supreme Court his ability to do so. Meanwhile, Gen. Choi appears to live in exile in the U.S., "without money or ... friends..." I don't understand. Soo Bahk! Of course he then goes on to criticize the WTF for having a non-martial artist as their President. I guess you just can't please some people ;) .
