Just a thought. As you related in your story, a drunk person with no knowledge of the martial arts gave you a black eye :) No one knows what happened in Emily's house on the night she was beaten except her attacker(s). She may have fought back, she may have been surprised, her attacker(s) may have gotten lucky, her attacker(s) may have used overwhelming force. I do know one thing. I second guessed Emily for almost a day. It only brought pain and fear. When I was able to accept that she was dead, and that she would've saved her life if she could, I was able to move on and heal and learn from her death. Michael deBethencourt started the day with a lecture on Deadly Force, covering such aspects as Opportunity, Ability, Jeopardy, and Preclusion. He then went on to discuss the Tueller and Magliato Drills and how they applied to perceived threat. We then went over standard knife carry and draw drills with the Left Hand (which is Michael's preferred hand for a number of reasons). We also covered the different grips and concealment options. Next, we drilled in knife targets and cutting techniques. Michael's favorite "Anus to Sex Organs" or "Sex Organs to Anus" made quite a few of the attendees wince. But before the night was done, everyone was aiming for the nether regions with enthusiasm. After this, we went on to cover knife retention techniques against a variety of disarm attempts. We covered Front and Rear Hug attacks, Head Locks and Chokes. We also drilled in sidearm retention techniques with the knife as well as Gun Disarms. One more target was provided after the dinner break... the back of the neck. We wrapped up the night with a review of all techniques. In truth, there were not too many for the 8+ hour seminar... which was a positive aspect of the seminar in my mind... too many techniques make skill retention more difficult. I found Mr. deBethencourt to be extremely knowledgeable and his humor to be... well, unique. I was grateful that he took his medication before, during and after the seminar (that's a joke, everyone). At night's end, everyone would respond to his famous query "How ya doing?" with his equally famous answer "Don't Care" and then proceed to mimic disemboweling their partner. Michael graciously stayed a good hour later to answer questions and listen to feedback. From the course reviews, it seems that this seminar was worth everyone's time, effort and money. The reviews asked for a rating of 1-5 for various aspects (with 5 being the best) and a number of 6's were given. Without a doubt, we will be hosting another deBethencourt seminar in the future. Keep an eye on our website (www.guardup.com) for information on dates. Thank you to the numerous participants for your professional conduct and thought provoking comments and questions. It was especially heartening to see 6 women besides myself attend the seminar and mock the notion of feminine inhibitions as they wielded their weapons without hesitation. I look forward to seeing each of you again at future seminars (maybe you will consider the upcoming "Self Defense on Ice" in March?). Stay safe. It was just an observation that GM Hwang Kee didn't take the offer to be involved in the KTA seriously because he thought they were just after his students and then he criticized Dr. Un Yong Kim for not being a Taekwon-Doin (which I think is legitimate). I have already stated on this list that I think that if GM Hwang Kee didn't want to be part of TKD then more power to him (not that my opinion matters in such things). I have also publically stated my admiration of his (and his son's) organization here in the U.S. This fact aside I am sorry if I offended you. There are, however, several versions of "what happened" out there and sometimes it's hard to get to the bottom of things. While GM Hwang battled in the Korean Supreme Court General Choi deemed his situation bad enough to leave his homeland. He doesn't just live "without money...or friends..." but, at least for a time, in fear of his life. What do these situations with the General and the Grand Master tell me? Not to cross the ROK government. It was well produced and the info was very well presented. I liked that Alain took the time to correctly show the difference between holding the wrist and holding the hand to lock the wrist. This is an excellent video for the TKDist or TSDist that is looking to add to and improve their hoshinsul. But what I also liked was the way the material was organized. Actually it was done very similarly to what I've been thinking about for the past few months and have discussed with Master Holcombe Thomas and a few others, (although Holcombe advised me that Aikido had already stole my idea :) That being instead of organizing the Hapkido syllabus by types of grabs, organize it by types of defenses. i.e. instead of teaching N defenses against wrist grab, then N defenses against elbow grab, then N defenses against shoulder grab, ...... , then N defenses against bear hug from the front, then from the rear, ... how about organizing the material so that the way to execute an armbar is taught and then all the ways to respond w/an armbar from a variety of attacks. Then teach the wrist lock w/possible throw and show how to respond with that defense from a variety of different attacks. The problem that I was attempting to address is one of self-defense. If one doesn't practice any defenses against a rear bear hug until blue belt, what happens if your green belt is grabbed on the street with a rear bear hug? Alain's video structured the material in this fashion, so I'm thinking he stole my idea... :) Actually it showed me that the idea I (and Alain and Aikido) had may not be so bad afterall. Comments from the Hapkido (or HRD, or KSW, or HMD) teachers & students out there? Back to Alain's video, I liked it and recommend it as an excellent intro into how Hapkido can deal with some very common 'street' situations. Check it out.
