Perhaps there could be a compromise, In Danzan Ryu.?. Maybe that is where I saw it. I did Danzan Ryu at a couple of different dojos a long time ago, but don't remember them using this approach. But maybe they did use it and I just forgot about it until I 'discovered' it again on my own... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "Kevin W. Just a note: Amazon shows that take about a month and a half to acquire Alain's video (if at all!) Is there a quicker way to get it? Thanks, Kevin W. The textbook introduces the punches and kicks as defenses against punches, the joint locks as defenses against wrist grabs, and the throws as defenses against clothing seizes. Each set has twelve basic techniques. The forms for each of these ranks use the same techniques but different applications of the same techniques the student is currently studying....usually defending against punches. At the upper ranks we focus more on specific defenses for specific attacks....kicks, clothing and body grabs from the rear, etc. These are the *minimum* rank requirements. However, when a student demonstrates a basic understand of the techniques, we then introduce them to different applications. For instance, an armbar would be used as a defense against a hair grab, lapel grab, two-hand wrist grab, choke, punch, or whatever else we can think of. We execute the attacks while sitting on the floor, backs against the wall, and against two attackers. We do anything to help the student find out what works, what doesn't, and under what situations they can respond with what techniques. I don't know if all our instructors do this, of course. I learned this method from Dr. Kimm. I hope some of you will be in Baton Rouge this weekend to meet him. (And me, too!) (We've been over this before, but new developments do occur.) A couple of years ago Col. KIM Bong-sik (Vice President, International Taekwondo Academy, Kukkiwon) indicated that there were zero 10th Dans in the WTF and they had no plans to award that particular rank. I inquired about President Kim and if he was an honorary 10th Dan and he again indicated that there were no 10th Dans. See v06.n297 and v06.n299 (Importance of 3 in the Korean Culture) for details of our previous discussion. Any newer info?
