The one in that video clip (if I'm looking at the right one) is a defense against a punch in which you throw an inside crescent kick from the opposite side (right leg kick against a right hand punch) and catch your opponent's arm on its *inside* with your foot. The momentum of the kick throws him sideways into a flip fall. BTW, Master Whalen *loves* this technique. The one in the movie 'Hapkido' is a spinning heel kick, again opposite side so right leg kick against a right hand punch, where you sort of close your leg on the *outside* of the opponent's arm, and then continue the spin so your opponent goes straight down on his stomach. GM Ji drops down on his knees after completing the technique, thus pinning his opponent. Do you study with GM Kim? But a good fighter would at least know a few evasions, and a few escapes, in case taken to the ground. If you want to specialize in standup, and have no interest in ground, that's fine. But you should have a strategy for staying, and returning, to your favored domain. ------------------------------ From: Kim Jones Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 20:41:15 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: more bomb threats - 2 in one day Well, Friday morning was eventful, although I as well as the rest of the student body of SAHS could have lived without that excitement. We had not one, but two bomb threats. The first one for today was called in during the morning, but the building was cleared. As I'm walking down the hall after asking my Health teacher how long my paper HAS to be, and then someone gets really rude over the intercom and demands that everybody stop and listen: We had ANOTHER bomb threat. So we were herded back to the gym again. From that point, I think everybody's fun meter was quite pegged, and they sent us home. they might have found something, but at this point we won't know until we return to school. This sort of thing is far from amusing. The first time it happened, people kinda thought it was cool. The second time, everybody was like, "ok, let's get back to school." Today was just over the line completely. There was absolutely no call for that. I'm honestly hoping CID can hurry their investigation because if we keep losing school days like this, nobody's gonna wanna go back and the "terrorist" wins. We can't let that happen, but so far it seems like nobody knows anything. Ugh........... I hope they can collar the suspect. They already confiscated a student's laptop and interrogated him, and he yelled at someone in the gym when approached. At any rate, if this particular person didn't do it, he shouldn't have gone around claiming he did. We're all hoping it doesn't turn into another Columbine. ===== ~~Kim Jones *ladytimberland@yahoo.com* ICQ: 52828008 AOL: Lady Timberland __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? That situation will be corrected at the end of March. The tournament in which I will compete calls for light - medium contact (no blood, no knockouts, etc.). The "problem": I am 6'4" and 215 lbs. My power tends to be very good (particularly in roundhouse, back-kicks and skipping side- kicks) but speed is only ok - nothing to write home about (for what it's worth, my hand speed is way better than my foot speed). Given the rules of engagement tend to nullify my strength and play to my weakness I'm in a quandry as to what sort of strategy to use. Therefore, I call upon the vast number of years of combined experience in the group here. With the stated facts, what strategy would you use if you were me? Thanks in advance for any help! My understanding is that Jackie Chan was trained by Jin Pal Kim (?). Jin Pal Hapkido is located in Rockville, MD. He also teaches at George Washington University. I just received a flyer in the mail from World Martial Arts, 800-682-9842. They sell a video series by Tony Cecchine entitled "Catch Wrestling". Several video topics include: a. Ground control. b. Arm Manipulations. c. Neck Manipulations. d. Leg Locks. e. Hooking Combinations. I am unable to comment on the quality of the videos. Cheers, McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
