I was working out at the fitness center where I teach CardioKarate. After my workout I was about to leave when the owner of the gym stopped me. He was talking to two men. He said, "oh good, Laura, you haven't left yet. There's someone I want you to meet. This is Bill Wallace." What at thrill and a surprise! We started talking and I got a chance to talk with him for about 10 minutes or so. He is quite a personality! He invited me, as his guest, to attend a seminar he's giving tomorrow at a local college. I am soooo stoked! I'll let you know how it was. R. West" Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 21:03:44 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: Training in the RVN Ray: There was virtually NO traditional or formal martial arts training conducted in Vietnam during the war, but there was a hell of a lot of hand to hand and TaeKwonDO taught (not to be confused with the TKD that is taught today here and abroad) by the M-21 instructors of the ROK army. I was very fortunate in that the 2 men that taught the Tiger Div. where I was located (about 15 miles NW of QuiNhon in BinhDinh province) were sharing a hooch with me so that I could teach them English. During the conflict, many instructors from styles other than TKD taught Oh Duk Kwan to the troops, and I was fortunate enough that these two guys were actually HapkiDo players (much like Master Bong Soo Han in Saigon). During the days I would attend several kicking and punching classes, but late in the afternoon we would adjourn to a volcanic outcropping called NuiMaHa, whose top had been blown off by Korean Artillery, leaving a flat surface covered with a thick gray powder. This powder became our "mat" and we would train in HapKiDo until it got dark. My superiors, both Korean and American, would allow me to get sleep any time I could and everytime that I was scheduled to go home, I would think about how much more I would learn if I extended for another tour. Everytime that I DID extend, I would take my 30 day free leave and go to Korea and train at one of the HapKiDo dojangs, and then it was back to VietNam. Every now and then I would see a couple of Americans working out in martial art uniforms, but like I said, formal training was next to nil. We had a Chaplain that would train with us and he would fill me in on the philosphical and historical aspects of Korean martial arts and I'm forever greatful to him for taking the time to educate me. I have read stories about other Americans training with the Tigers, but during the 51 months that I was there I never saw anyone else. J. R. West ------------------------------ From: TaoArt@aol.com Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 23:00:58 EST Subject: the_dojang: Kendo, Iaido, Fencing Demo: Afterglow The demonstration of Kendo, Iaido and Fencing at our facility in Waltham, MA went very well. We started with a demonstration of dry foil. I got to show an audience how terribly out-of-touch my skills have grown in this sport (haven't picked up a foil more than a couple times in the past ten years). Some very nice lunges... nice timing... nice distance... and *whoooosh* missed my target by a mile. :) Good thing my opponent hadn't touched a foil in 15 years... And then I stepped aside and let the experts take over with demonstration in electric saber. (No, not the Jedi kind). Then came the Iaido demo. Since we were short in numbers, I was invited by Mr. Poitras (one of the finest martial artists, let alone Iaido instructors, that I have ever met) to join the demo team. I performed the first three kata and then chose to observe from Seiza (kneeling position) while the advance ranks continued through 4-10. I have too much respect for the art to demonstrate katas in which I do not have sufficient practice. Next came the Kendo demo. And the crowd thickened as the growls and yells filled the gym. It was spectacular. Mr. David Harrison is an incredible force. He took on one of his students with his one shinai (bamboo sword) against his student's two shinai. Impressive. The press got their fill of footage, photos and interviews. I am told that there will be an airing on Boston's Channel 7 News sometime this week at 4PM. I will have more specifics tomorrow. The Boston Globe West Weekly will be running a full photo spread in the Sunday Sports section either this Sunday or February 6th. If you live in the area, keep an eye open for it. I had the opportunity to meet some people from these mail lists. I was extremely impressed with everyone's demeanor and presence. Thank you each for attending our event and I hope to see you again soon. And last, but not least, I am very excited to announce that we will be officially offering Kendo as a part of our weekly programs. The starting date will be announced soon. The instructor is a sandan and personal student of Mr. Harrison. We will also be hosting upcoming seminars as well as a Kendo tournament or two. All this because Mr. Harrison loved our spacious wooden floor (the jacuzzi and sauna probably didn't hurt either). As soon as the photos come in from the shoot, we will post them to our website. We will also update the schedule to reflect the new Kendo classes when the day/time is finalized (most likely this week). Thank you all who expressed an interest in this demonstration, even if you couldn't make it to the event. Please keep in touch. Our organization thrives on the exchange of information with others.
