My name is Alain Burrese and I'm a law student at the University of Montana.
I have been teaching Hapkido self-defense techniques to the Big Sky TKD club
on campus for a year and a half now, and a few weeks ago I started a new
Hapkido program at Garden City Family TKD. The owner, Scott Becker wanted
the hapkido program for those not interested in TKD and wanting something
different.
My Martial art training started with Judo back in 82-83 and since then I have
trained in different things off and on. At times that I was not training in
a formal school, I'd be getting together with friends and we would knock each
other around. My introduction to Hapkido actually came just after returning
from Korea the first time back in 89-90.
I then went back to Korea in 96 to learn more of this art, and went to 11
classes a week while living there. My school was under the Korea Hapkido
Federation, president Oh Se Lim, and my dan rank is from this organization.
Besides Korea, I have also lived in Japan and have visited other areas in
Asia. I have a passion for the far east and besides martial arts try to
study other areas from these countries. I try and pass on the things I have
learned by writing and now videos.
I am the author of "Hard-Won Wisdom From the School of Hard Knocks: How to
Avoid a Fight and Things to do When You Can't or Don't Want To," a book on
realistic self-defense and violence. It is Published by Paladin Press. Also
just out through Paladin is my video "Hapkido Hoshinsul" a tape showing basic
Hapkido principles and techniques geared toward self-defense rather than just
a belt promotion tape. I am in the works of making a new 2 video set on
self-defense that is not martial art specific, and I have several book ideas
that are started. (but law school doesn't give me a lot of time to work on
them)
For more about me, check out my web site and the link to the Paladin Press
author of the month site.
Yours in Training

The subject of Bill "Superfoot Wallace" emerged on the list. There has
been a recent thread of going back to the early movement of martial arts
and Karate in the U.S.
Bill Wallace was a pioneer in the American Kickboxing scene. If you look at
some of his older fights he along with Benny "The Jet" Uriquez (sic), Joe
Lewis, and so forth really accomplished much.
I have read that an injury to Wallace's right leg caused him to develop
his left leg to the point where he was unstoppable. He has a few good
videos on Panther about stretching and sparring.

Subject: the_dojang: whoz here?
It's not a patch on JR or Hal, but I've studied Hapkido for what seems
a long time to me, over 16 years, starting in 1983 at Iowas State University
with Yong Chin PAK of NCTA fame. Achieved 4th Dan in '96.
Consider myself primarily a HKD guy, but love TKD and arnis as well.
Achieved black belt in arnis in fall of last year and 4th Dan TKD last Nov.
What attracted me first and what I enjoy the most about HKD is the range of
control. You can defend yourself without having to hurt the attacker more
than the situation calls for. You can be passive (escape), active (cause a
little pain), or all-out in your defense, breaking joints or killing as
needed.
Hmmm, this will probably get me kicked off the 'other' list. How what's
essentially a conversation with people you don't know on one list is
'disloyal' to people you don't know on another list...I don't get it.

Hello,
I'm Sam Stratton, I have practiced TKD in Seattle, WA are for five years. I achieved my black belt last May and assist my grand masters with instructing the children's class - which is a kick! I just started kicking again after busting a couple of pieces of my left femur(sp) last October. Although sore, I am feeling so goood! I hope to be able to kick with the right leg soon. But kicking with my left foot (lame as it is, after three months) is ambrosia!
Thanx

Well, I might have been in the right place at the right time last night,
but the foot of snow that's now dumping here in the valley is definitely
in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It is looking likely that I won't be attending Bill Wallace's seminar
after all. :^( I will definitely make a point of catching one of his
seminars in the near future.
Snowed in,
Laura

Subject: the_dojang: Re: cross training, sparring, use of hands
Hello all,
Now that I have switched my subscription to home instead of work, maybe I can
actually participate in the list. It was nice to read at lunchtime but, I never
had time to write.
I started TKD a little less than two years ago. This was until recently all
the ma experience I had. I am a little confused about the on and off again
discussions concerning the use of hands. We are an ITF school and do non or light
contact sparring every class. We use, and are instructed in, a lot of hand
techniques. If you are not using your hands at our school, you will lose your
lunch in sparring. Is this an ITF thing? I have never attended a WTF school but,
it seems like WTF is primarily focused on feet. Is this true or am I misreading?
No disrespect is intended to anyone's style. Just looking for info.
It took a while to get going on it but, now that I have started cross
training, I love it. We have a 4th Dan TKD at our school who is also well versed
in both Chin Na and Aikido. The school is open Wednesday nights for an open
workout, meaning there are no classes. My son and I have taken the opportunity to
cross train in both Chin Na and Aikido with the 4th dan. It has been very
beneficial. I am not using either much in sparring but it has improved my
reflexes and, more importantly, my confidence. I will continue to cross train and
take every opportunity I can get.
My sparring style has evolved over time. I now use a fair amount of fakes and
misdirection to throw my opponents off. Seems to work OK, but there are still
other students who will clean my clock every time. I always spar with the highest
rank I can. The 4th dan I mentioned above is one of my sparring partners. He is
always very informative. We have a 3rd dan who is the same. There are a couple
other 1st dans who I also enjoy sparring with. I have actually started getting in
a few shots here and there with these guys, though the matches overall are
definitely in their favor. I guess what I am trying to say is that sparring is
evolutionary art form. The more I study, the more my style changes. Sorry for
rambling so much.
Happy training
Bill - 5th Green ITF TKD
