He is also a genuine 'personality'. He knows how to make a crowd smile and give a great seminar. I learned a lot. It's almost impossible to describe what I learned as far as technique goes. Suffice it to say I learned a lot of strategy about speed for sparring that was brilliant and that I hadn't seen before. I also learned some different things about stretching. More importantly, I learned just how much women struggle with the "we must be liked" complex and recognizing verbal attacks. I went to the seminar with a fellow female martial artist, higher ranking than me, who has been to two Wallace seminars in the past (14 years ago). This woman is one of my best friends and I know a lot about her past and it's not pretty. She is an extreme example of how many women place all of their self-value on what other people think of them. Bill Wallace is what many people might call charming. He is very funny (to a point) and my friend remembered those qualities from her time with him in the past. All that day she was acting like a teenager going to meet her teen idol. Come blizzard or hurricane she was going to go see Bill Wallace. When I first met him, I let a lot of sexist remarks and overt flirting go. He was behaving this way from the moment I met him at the gym to the time I left him at the restaurant that evening. He behaved this way with me and with my friend. While we were having our picture taken, he was making sexual overtures about having a 'threesome' and scolding me for bringing my husband along to the seminar. During the group shot my friend and I kneeled down with the front row and his remark was that that's how he liked to see all women....'on their knees'. I wish I had left right there and then. My friend and I were having a picture taken, with him in the center, and he put his arms around us both. My friend reached up and grabbed his hand and it fell downward. He grabbed her breast three times during that shot. She was beside herself. I didn't know he grabbed her until we were on our way to meet them for dinner. I wish I had demanded that we go home then. At dinner we talked about martial arts and he continued to flirt while my friend continued to try and gain his approval. I brought up self-defense which for me, naturally turned to women's self defense. The man wasn't interested in women's SD issues. Infuriatingly so! It got a bit strange and very quiet. He was obviously annoyed because he started deliberately ignoring and avoiding my questions and comments. He even cracked a joke about my 'deserving' to be assaulted, when I described some experiences I had had. I guess I continued with the topic because I found it disappointing that someone in his position didn't approach self-defense with women's issues at least in mind. I feel drained and disappointed about the whole thing. What was originally going to be a wonderful experience ended up being very sad. My friend and I learned a lot. We learned about roundkicks and boxing techniques but we also learned that approval isn't worth the pain. I got a rude reminder that woman will be considered as bitches or whores unless they are nice and comply all of the time. I'm done. I won't kneel with someone in a group shot who makes those kinds of comments and I won't share a meal with someone who assaults my friends, even if he is Bill Wallace. There are a lot of things to like about Bill Wallace. There are certainly a lot of things to be learned from Bill Wallace. But, in the end, he is not the sort of man I can respect as a person. Mostly I learned that my goal is to come out of experiences like this saying "I'm glad I...." instead of "I wish I had..." Another wish is that I had spoken up at the time. I guess I didn't want Bill Wallace to think badly of me either so I didn't. Next time I will. Finally!!! The long overdue overhaul of the FMA Instructors database is done. All the listings have been moved from the old database that Mike Seilnacht compiled to the new system. The new system is entirely interactive. It allows you to view, search, browse, edit and delete on the spot. Hope you find it useful http://www.pekiti-tirsia.org:8080/FMA/ A few notes: o if you previously submitted a listing to the old database, you should go check it out - if you haven't already received an e-mail telling you the Owner/Password that you need to change or delete it, then send e-mail to "fma@pekiti-tirsia.org" - say who you are and what listing(s) you want to change o currently the server uses port :8080 - in the future it is likely to change to the default 80 port - but for now you need it o you will see that other services are due - in particular the organizations database should be ready shortly - PLEASE DON'T SUBMIT ORGANIZATIONS LISTINGS TO THE INSTRUCTORS DATABASE o if you have any problems, PLEASE report them to fma@pekiti-tirsia.org so we can fix them for everyone - try to provide as much detail as possible (a bug with the submission interface was recently fixed thanks to several responsible submittors) o any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated even just personal preferences about appearance and interface -- 'gards, /\ Pekiti-Tirsia kali / \ silat Jati Wisesa Loki Jorgenson < MANOyBASTON Martial Arts > / __ \ Dog Brothers MA loki@pekiti-tirsia.org (604) 254-0240 / _L \ Majapahit Empire www.pekiti-tirsia.org/ManoBaston/ /________\ (Inosanto-IMAIA) ------------------------------ From: Ken McDonough Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2000 08:27:58 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Re: When it's real; ASP Baton question and comment Master Burrese makes an excellent post below. I am familiar with Datu Kelly Worden's work with Paladin Press on Baton Training. I believe the expandable baton is a good weapon choice and legal for carry ? My question is in reviewing the ASP Tactical Batons, what is the feeling of readers here on the best baton length, i.e., 21" Baton or 28" baton. Is one length preferable over the other regarding in close figthing or trapping ? Thanks for any feedback, K. The word "accomplishments" depends upon what area your discussing. Now Wallace and the "Jet" did not invent the Kitchen Magician by Ronco, and they did not come up with Windows for Computers, electricity, or the nobel peace prize. However, when discussing the early kickboxing scene in the U.S. they were pioneers. Both were considered best in their respective divisions. Both popularized martial arts and the AKA or other Kickboxing scene. Both were in movies with Jackie Chan (that must be something, eh ?). Both published, taught, and trained other martial artists. Now, I would not say that they imparted a pure martial art. Yet, in there specific genre they accomplished much. If I go to the search engine and look up both individuals then I could chronologically list their respective accomplishments. However, other readers may get annoyed and complain to the list moderator. In sum, you have to categorize the word accomplishments,i.e., no they were not painters, or inventors per se. Yet, they did paint a nice picture of skill in kickboxing and they did provide training tips for others who want to pursue a similar path. Cheers, K.
