I don't consider myself a master, just someone who likes to share, teach and pass on what I'm learning. I'm a student who knows more than some and less than others that hopes to continue learning and passing things on for as long as I'm breathing. I achieved yellow belt, but was retracted from the club by my parents on the account that they thought it was too hard on me (I think that it was a lot of hard core TKD back then). Eventually Young Choung expanded to my hometown in a couple of years and I continued my studies at the new club until I achieved 1st Dan in '94, and eventually 2nd Dan in '97. This is the year I came to Queen's University (and i'm looking for a job in the electrical engineering/ mathematics and engineering side of things in the GTA... greater toronto area... thought i'd try here too just for the hell of it), but I couldn't find a comparable WTF TKD here, one that would work me out as much as TKD used to, so I decided to take Hae Dong Gumdo (officially spelt Hai Dong Gumdo... go figure). Right now I'm up to 2nd Gup in HDG, and hope to cross train in Hapkido, Tang Soo Do, and any other Korean MA out there... but swords really are COOL. 8) My years have increased my interest in the arts, their philosophy, the Do. And unfortunately, there are men who will not stand up to those sexists and demand that they treat their sisters in the arts with respect. Both types are distasteful to me. He is a very conscientious and upbeat guy. He has unique ideas on martial arts. As you know he is into Filipino Martial Arts and JKD. The two baton videos are a good bang for the buck. He starts off with the different sizes, then basic stances, then blocks and strikes. He then moves into street attacks and how to implement the baton in these scenarios. It is a good no-nonsense approach to a weapon that apparently is street legal. Incidentally, Kelly Worden makes a plastic weapon based on the Filipino Kerambit. It looks like a key chain but can be highly effective in a self-defense mode. Again, a weapon that is apparently street legal. Finally, you should check out his website at http://home.earthlink.net/~wordenk/index.htm For those individuals who like wooden dummies or Mook Yan Chong, he produces a unique one called The Silent Fighter. Closed, it is just a bit over 7" and fits nicely in almost any pocket. You can also open it while in a car and not bash your passenger. Its also not so long as to make it hard to grapple with. But on the downside it a little shorter. If you ask me, if your trained in martial arts and use of the baton and still need the extra 7", I don't think they will do you much good. I am attending ASP training on February 12th, and I can give you more input on the pro's and con's of what I find out. Assuming others there, have different sized batons. I did not know they produced a 28" though. All I knew of was 21" 26" & 31", but I am not an expert. - -- Dan Myers S.I.S.
