I know from personal experience that for me, stretching is a waste of time if I haven't warmed up my muscles first. I used to get funny looks from my classmates as I ran for 5 to 10 minutes before class started around the perimeter of the dojang floor to warm up my leg muscles and then rotated all of my joints. But that was preferable to stretching cold muscles that did not want to cooperate! I guess everyone is different and the important thing is for an individual to figure out what works best for them. I've been planning, since red belt, to practice a grappling style art in addition to TKD upon achieving second dan. The more I learn about Hapkido, the more I think I would like to train in it as my second style of martial art. I think I'd like to stay in the Korean tradition as well to maintain consistent philosophy. I hope I will be able to find a good teacher in my area. Alain's video sold me on it. It is well organized and very easy to follow. The techniques are demonstrated with skill and precision and thorough explanation. I recommend this video to anyone with an interest in Hapkido or an interest in self defense. One thing I found interesting was how similar the drills and basic concepts are to those we practice on a regular basis at my TKD dojang. The big difference is the attention to joint locks and take downs. I'm told that Master West will be holding a seminar within driving distance from my home in the spring. I am already planning to attend and am very excited about it, especially after viewing this video. Thanks for a great introduction to Hapkido techniques Alain. I'm sure you will be successful with it and all your future endeavors. From what I have seen and experienced the techniques which get labelled as 'hoshinsul" are all practiced in two person drills but I haven't really thought of them as forms before... Perhaps because my own instructor refused to keep the attacks of a static nature. Still, submission holds from a punch all needed a punch. ;} From this point of view Hapkido schools I have seen here teach between 10 and 50 two person forms for every test and they are all required for a passing grade. The variance comes from whether the instructor feels a few key points can explain the theory or if many similar drills will better teach the theory.
