I've not encountered any soreness. When I've done them on a regular basis, I've made progress with the height of my kicks from the flexibility increase. Unfortunately, I haven't really comitted this practice to habit. The biggest problem I've had in following Kurz' methods is that the sequence of types of exercise we do in class conflicts with his desirable sequence. >Have you tried the techniques in Scientific Stretching? In my dojang the instructor stressed for us at the beginning of the year that before streching we had to be warm, and to do "at least 15 minutes very intensive aerobic exercise". We warm up for about 20 mins and then do about 10-15 minutes of stretching. This must be effective as I haven't heard anyone saying they have pulled anything, and we are all beginners in my class. We also had a yoga seminar recently on streches of various types for the hamstrings and calves, especially doing forward bends without hurting the back. It was stressed that if you do stretches wrong, especially bending the back during forward bends, you will do more damage than good, but if you do them right, you strengthen and stretch the muscles. (This is in contrast to my school athletics coach, 10 years ago (at age 15), when I as doing cross-country running, who didn't tell us anything much about stretching. As a consequence, not only did I injure my knee then and pull muscles during running, I also significantly weakened my back so I tended to pull muscles in it very easily, for example, when turning over in bed). So, in my (limited) sporting experience, even if you don't injure yourself during training, not stretching is very bad news. Incidentally, I would recommend the book "Stretching" by Bob Anderson for anyone who wants to read about the details of common streches, which ones to do before different sports etc. I found this book very useful when I took up jogging before I started tkd.
