I have been a practitioner of Hapkido for 1 1/2 years, and have achieved the rank of 6th Gup. I also studied Karate for 9 months, 10 years ago. I like the hard workouts I get when we work on basics. I love the practicality of Hapkido. I enjoy the challenge and the frustration :) But the primary reason I come to class is that I have great classmates that increase the value of the class tenfold. My name is John Oss, 38 years old, am a Pricing Manager for an Air Cargo company currently invoved in project management, and I have been involved in Tae Kwon Do since January of 1997. I started training with my daughter (17 years old) and have attained my Red Belt with Black stripe and train at Quest Martial Arts in Tae Kwon Do (ITF Patterns) in Toronto Ontario Canada. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from some great instructors (mentors), they are: Maria Turnhout, Laura Welch and Johnny Kim. Initially I became invloved in TKD solely as a way to exercise to get back into shape. I had no idea that it would become a key part of my life. It truly is fitness with a purpose. I have seen some great changes in focus and attitude in my daughter which I can only attribute to the teaching she is receiving at our school and her application of it in everyday life. I have the opportunity to help teach the younger kids in our school on Saturdays (under the direction of the instructor) which has helped me in becoming a better martial artist and a better parent as well. I just passed our pre-test to the Black Belt cycle and am eager to go through the next phase of testing towards my first Dan. I am very interested in reading the correspondence in the digest as it gives me a wider view of the martial arts styles and community. Learning about the history and meaning of the forms or weapons is important to me as I want to know "WHY" things are done and I want to be part of the tradition in passing on some of the past to future students as well. It seems that the tests in Kukkiwon will be more similar to these in other countries. I don`t really remember a test here in Poland without doing Kibon Dongjak (especially since GM Lee seems to be a fan of these :) and questions about the Korean names of about every other technique in Poomse.
