As a hunch, however, I suspect that if taekwondo succeeds in the Olympics, many of our leaders will use that publicity to open the doors for a more universal approach towards taekwondo. In my experience, this is more or less what we have here in the U.S., already -- at least in comparison to the purely sporting way in which taekwondo has been promoted and practiced in many other nations that have strong teams. Iran, Spain, Croatia, Australia, Turkey, Brazil, Denmark and Egypt (in nor order) come to mind. President Lee has said that while the origin or "root of taekwondo" is, of course, in Korea, it is in the United States where the body of taekwondo shall take form and flourish. The wealth, prominence, power and mass media output, of America will make it the nation that carries the torch for taekwondo in the 21st Century, he believes. Today, in Korea, taekwondo is primarily for kids, adults there being too busy working to support themselves to do much in the way of recreational sports. In the US however, the paradigm is for people in all stages of life to enjoy taekwondo, with our youth, perhaps, specializing in the sporting or competitive side. It is this broad demographic participation that President Lee hopes to perpetuate world-wide as part of his legacy. Ironic that a man so personally responsible for the progress of our Olympic Movement holds such a viewpoint, isn't it? The USTU, as our NGB has the primary responsibility of selecting and training America's Elite Athletes; that is, of course an NGB's "job." It has recently added to its mission statement, however, the goals of perpetuating the universal practice of the art of taekwondo for the betterment of the health and well-being of our nation. Time, as always, will tell, but I hope he is right. Taekwondo is too good to be left only to the kids of the world. If they like it, they'll keep it, but there are a lot of people going to test for their cho-dan at Kukkiwon every month, numbering anywhere from 200 or more. Unless they move people through separate judging rooms for the basic movements before sending them to do their forms and sparring, there will be a serious backlog of people waiting to go out and test. They also require that you bring in a memorandum stating that you lived in Korea a year prior to testing. I'm guess this is regardless of what rank you're testing for. I'll try and get a copy of the memorandum (translated because it's in hangul). that should clarify some more things. ===== ~~Kim Jones *ladytimberland@yahoo.com* ICQ: 52828008 AOL: Lady Timberland "I've kept the rain falling down on me all the time." ~Roxette, "The Rain" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I hold a third dan in Taekwondo from Kukkiwon. I also have a first dan in Hapkido from the Korea Hapkido Association. I have been training in Hapkido since the summer of 1995 at Hapkido Chun Mu Kwan (Korea Hapkido Federation - KHF) under Headmaster Paek Un Chon in Newport News, Virginia. I was a student at the College of the William & Mary at the time. I also trained under Master Myung-Il Kim at a Hapkido Jin Jung Kwan (KHF) school in Bangbae, Seoul, Korea in summers of '97 & '98. From the fall of 1999, I have been training with Master Mike McCarty and Master Hal Whalen of the Hapkido Moo-Ye-Kwan. I am much more impressed with Korean Hapkido than WTF Taekwondo because it is richer, in my opinion. One, it is not just based on external power, but in the uniting of internal power (wae ki), external power (nae ki), and weapon power (moo ki). Two, it's techniques are not just limited to kicks and punches, but also joint-locks and throws. Three, the techniques can be applied by anyone to anyone, regardless of size, power, age, gender, etc. Most importantly to me, there are still many techniques to be learned after 1st dan black belt. My experience with WTF Taekwondo is that not much is learned after 1st dan level besides combinations and sparring. I ask the readers to please "indulge" me. This is just my opinion.
