I have the official list directly from Vincent of the few that paid for and received a Master's from Angel. Grant is not on that list, and Vincent hasn't promoted anyone to Master level (at least as of about a year ago when I last chatted with him via email). Extravagance and Authenticity: Romantic Love and the Self in Early Modern Korean Literature (Kim Uchang) 4. A Study of Manhae Han Yong-un (Yom Moo-Ung) 5. Seoul, Tokyo, New York: Modern Korean Literature Seen through Yi Sang's "Lost Flowers" (Choi Won-shik) 6. The Poetry of Kim Su-yong; The Living Kim Su-yong (Paik Nak-chung) 7. In fact, at the higher ranks, the physical requirements usually start to diminish and knowledge, teaching , and contributions play an ever increasing role. (Although the ATA requirement seems much more specific than I have heard before.) I think it is important to remember that martial arts is about more than just the physical skills. Those who continue to train and train others and even dedicate their lives to that end deserve special recognition. It is their job and their passion. Remember, no matter how hard you work (at any job), not everyone can be chairman of the board (too many chiefs, .......). The ability to throw a "perfect" 360 jump spinning roundhouse kick is impressive, but not nearly as impressive as being able to share that knowledge and teach 500 students to throw a "perfect 360 jump spinning roundhouse kick. However, one fundamental flaw=good mats > are needed. I have located a good source for mats. Best prices and... Well, I have a counter-example... Some local JuJutsu guys came to a knife seminar taught by Suro Mike Inay a couple years ago. During a break in the seminar Inay asked the various people attending to give a short demo of their art (given a wide variety of folks that were in attendance). The JuJutsu folks showed their breakfalls, they were beautiful and they were being demoed on a hardwood floor. They explained that at their club they had never used mats. They met in a basketball gym and since they didn't have and couldn't afford mats they didn't believe in using them... :) Anyway, these guys (supposedly) never (seldom?) practiced their fall on mats, so they were quickly forced into learning proper breakfalls. No, I don't plan on throwing out my mats... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: ATATKD@aol.com Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 10:31:14 EST Subject: the_dojang: Re: The_Dojang-Digest V7 #86 In a message dated 2/9/00 10:07:05 AM Eastern Standard Time, the_dojang-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << ATA requires that anyone testing for 4th degree black belt must be a certified instructor (which follows a comprehensive instructor-trainee program). My wife and I have discussed this time and time again. Neither one is in my future as far as I can predict. Does this mean I am not serious about my Taekwondo? Of course not. This is one requirement I hope changes, else I will be sitting at 3rd for a long time. Of course then you have to say to yourself, when I get to 4th are the requirements for 5th going to change. :p Joe ATA - Long Island, NY ------------------------------ From: Olivos@aol.com Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 10:42:48 EST Subject: the_dojang: kups and divisions or categories Over the weekend I participated in a TKD tournament and currently I'm a 1st kup and because of my age, I'm suppose to be in the senior divion. Now, to my surprise I found out that I was the only senior participating and therefore they put me in the woman's division for sparring (one below senior division). Because I'm 1st kup they put me with the Black belts. Also, when I went for breaking, I was the only woman and I was placed with the black belts and men. And finally for forms, again I was placed with the black belts but I was the only one performing tae guks forms!. Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? How did you dealt with the situation? Anyone know the percentage for "seniors" participating in the sport compared to the rest of the divisions? As for those who are wondering how I did, not to bad I obtained 2nd place in sparring and 2nd place for breaking (no trophy for forms). I should have been more clear in saying that there were only 2 people promoted to 9th dan by the founder Choi, Yong Sool, GM Lim, Hyun Soo and Chang Chin Il. The others you mentioned are from Master Ji wich is Sin Moo HKD not the original taught by the founder. Please do not misunderstand what I have said. Todd ------------------------------ From: HKDTodd@aol.com Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 11:24:20 EST Subject: the_dojang: Good post Vic I do not mean to sound like there is only one way in HKD. I have seen many people on the matt, some were good and some were not just as many of you I suspect. I enjoy shareing and working with other schools of thought. But facts are facts there are many people that claim numbers (rank) that to be honest does not show when they are on the matt. I think Vic put it well when he said that so called GMasters should make it clear when they promote themselves to 9th dan in there Kwans. I also beleive that the closer you get to the source the better off you are. I'm curious as to the quality of the broadcast you receieved. I'm still in 56K mode, and had terrible reception. The fights were long in loading and very erratic, with playback usually in FF. :-) I guess what i'm getting at here is, did anyone with a cable, or other high speed modem catch this broadcast? (or any other). How was the quality? I guess what I'm REALLY getting at here is, Should I get a Cable modem? BTW, I think USA Tekno (& others), are providing a great service by offering these events online for free. They make it available, It's up to us to make sure we have the technology to view it properly. Any comments?
