Hello there Sandy: With my particular experience, It took me 6 years to attain my 1st Dan Black Belt. After that the wait was 3 years for my 2nd Dan. My former GM, made us wait one year after the physical test to find out the results. My Current GM (NSL), and Master, award the rank almost immediately. My style is World Chang Moo Kwan Tae Kwon Do under GM Nam Suk Lee and Master Jon Wiedenman. My 2 cents.. Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 08:01:47 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: 9th Dans Glad to hear that my friend and Hapkido bludgeoning partner Master Rick Nabors is on this board, I too will second the idea of hearing from the "more experienced" members of the board, I love to hear Master West and Master Whalen talk about their training in the early Hapkido years, let's face it we are all ate up with the love of Hapkido, and since we can't be on the mat ALL the time, we like to supplement the physical with the mental. A quick question to these gentlemen, how do you think the overall training that you see in Hapkido today is different from the training in the 60's and 70's? And what do you think is better now, and what do you think is worse now? Hey all of a sudden I feel like Regis Philburn!! Rick, I am getting ready for the training coming up at your Dojang, last nite I dressed up like a baby seal and had my students wear eskimo coats and beat me upon the head and body for about an hour, so I am definately getting ready for you and Javier!! Michael Tomlinson ------------------------------ From: HKDTodd@aol.com Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 08:03:46 EST Subject: the_dojang: 9th dans Yes, I have herd that GM Chang originally studied with Master Ji but he left M. Ji and went to Doju Nim Choi, Yong Sool for obvious reasons. GM Lim started training with Choi, Yong Sool in 1964 until Choi's retirement (82-83). Let me ask a? Where was Master Ji? He was not training with Choi at this time and how long did he actually train with Choi? Answer about 3 years. It is my understanding that GM Chang was promoted to Head (Doju) of Hapkido not necessarily 10th dan. I know a lot of you are getting upset at this subject but if you enjoy what you are doing and are receiving benefits from it then just relax and keep doing what your doing. I am just giving what I believe to be the truth in this open forum. As I have said before people are always welcome at my dojang as long as you come with an open mind and a healthy attitude and I will do the same but if you want to argue and bicker go to the second grade it would be more appropriate. I missed no exam cycles and failed no tests en = route. That's the average for an adult student based on time in grade = requirements. Within the MDK Federation, there are time requirements based on = consistent training (hours on mat is a factor). To be eligible for E Dan requires = a two year prep after Cho Dan (it took me the 2 years too!). Add another = year for each Dan level as you go up (3 for Sam Dan, 4 for Sa Dan, etc.). Hope that helps. Soo Bahk!! Cliff Vaught - ------------------------------ From: "Gecko K. I am and have never ment to belittle anyone or tried to say that there is no skill out there. I have seen some great people in training but I have also seen some very arrogant and shallow skilled people (you know who you are). I love to train but I do not like the truth about the founder being diminished and falsified. No one is being disrespectful to your instructor, just explaining the facts. All should remember that being respectful is a requirement for list membership. Not a threat, just another fact.
