First of all, none of us ever "master" our given arts.Even at high dan levels we learn. Not always about technique, but hopefully about ourselves and others around us.Some people are not meant to be teachers. It is one thing to learn and another to teach. Believe me, a few things you learn teaching are patience, and absolutely care about what you are doing. It is conveyed into every student you will ever have.I'm sure you were not the easiest person to train,I know I wasn't. The point I'm getting at is, we never stop learning. Anybody who claims they know everything about any particular art is fooling themselves and blowing smoke up their students ass!!!!!!!! Later, Steve. ------------------------------ From: Scott Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000 18:07:36 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Re: Just a white belt. Thanks to all the Hapkido practitioners and masters for their contributions. Especially, thank you (Grand?)Master West for your article on Hapkido theory and kinetics. Thank you Master Whalen for your dedication to Hapkido and its history. For me, Hapkido is not only fir technique, but it is designed to encourage personal harmony with the universe. By developing unification of wae ki (external power), nae ki (internal power), and moo ki (weapon power), we learn the discipline of unification. In the three fold strategy of Hapkido - Yu Won Hwa, we learn not only to harmonize with ourselves, others, but also with the physical universe. This is from my personal experience and I believe that it has increased the benefit of Hapkido to my life tenfold. (Although these theories are quite abstract, the resulting physical movements of self-defense work great! That's the best part about Hapkido! It works on the street!) Just recently I got in some tapes of Drunken Kung fu and Snake style Kung fu. Imagine my surprise to see them doing Taekwondo and Hapkido techniques!!! It's amazing how far back some of the techniques really go. And how they have "evolved" or the years to be basicly the same as when they started. > Scott ------------------------------ From: "Farral, Kim G" Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 06:41:36 -0600 Subject: the_dojang: RE: Rank vs. Responsibility >Skill is for the body, knowledge is for the mind, teaching and making one's art a way of life is for the spirit (not just one's own spirit, but the spirit of the art). Excellently put!...You are on the right path already...you have the beginnings of a great life in the Martial arts... too bad there aren't more Black Belts with this White Belt's enthusiasm and spirit! You know the one that say's they are only two true 9th dans in Hapkido that were promoted by Doju Choi, Yong Sool. I will keep this short and to the point. For anyone out there that feels Grandmasters Ji Han Jae, Myung Kwan Sik, Bong Soo Han, Choi, Han Young and the list goes on are anything less than 9th dans, I pose this to you, find them and attend a seminar with anyone or all of them and you will find out first hand what makes these gentlemen who and what they are. Move forward get over the my Grandmaster is real and yours is not. The truth, what is the truth? When one can place themselves in a position of power, worth and importance using what they perceive as the truth they become blinded and see only what it is that they are looking for. Is it real or is it what you want it to be. I have had the pleasure and felt the pain of 3 out of 4 of the above mentioned individuals and I assure you I would not class any of them less then 9th dans. You sell yourself short when you place more value on the persons rank than the knowledge he has to share. Train to live and live to train.
