Videotapes and textbooks are great resources, but they are NOT substitutes for live instruction. I thought a could learn Taekwondo by buying a videotape, but I had no clue what I was doing. Only a real instructor can evaluate one's performance and explain the movements. The same goes for any martial arts. Anyone who says you can learn martial through a video tape series or correspondence course is full of garbage. Currently, I cannot regularly train in Hapkido because they are no instructors near me. I use Grandmaster Kwang Sik Myung's "Korean Hapkido: Ancient Art of the Masters," "Hapkido Special Self Defense Techniques," "Hapkido Weapons: Knife," and Dr. He-Young Kimm's Hapkido Bible as references. I also know that many Taekwondo people are interested in Hapkido. That's great, but you are kidding yourself if you think that as Taekwondo black belt, can learn the techniques from a video. I know. I was Taekwondo black belt when I started Hapkido, but I put on a white belt and trained with Master Paek Un Chon. Hapkido complements Taekwondo, but it is so very, very different. If you are a Taekwondo balck belt and want to add some basic joint locks and sweeps, get a good video on Taekwondo self-defense (maybe Grandmaster Hee Il Cho's videos and Dr. Sang H. Kim). If you want to learn Hapkido, find a legitmate Hapkido master (certified with Korea Hapkido Assoc, Korea Hapkido Fed, Int'l Hapkido Fed, etc.) and start from white belt. I did that and I have not regretted it. Although I am first dan in Hapkido (and 3rd dan in Taekwondo), I totally disagree with Int'l Combat Hapkido video correspondence course. I am also very disappointed that Grandmaster Hee Il Cho has a similar Taekwondo video course. (Sorry for all these wordy postings.) Sincerely, Michael Choi ------------------------------ From: Tkdtiger@aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 13:53:04 EST Subject: the_dojang: Colorado Springs 2/20/00 Fight Off Early Results - Our thoughts go with peter Bardatsos who was knocked out int he first round by Richard An. IN a freak accident, Peter was skipping in as Richard launched a triple roundhouse - as Peter fell, he was hit flush on the jaw, possibly breaking or dislocating it. In the third round of their fight - Josh Coleman made up the point he was behind and went on to beat Jean Lopez 2-1 Simona Hradil beat Shanaz. Dana Martin beat Kelly Thorpe Amy Blythe won, as did Steven lopez and Jason Han You might tune into Peter Bardatsos' web site and send him a get well note. This is a lousy way to retire. Richard feels awful about the way it happened, but those things do, and we can't help it. Good luck to them both ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 12:11:29 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: HKD videos, gone Just acknowledging the dozen+ emails I received about the extra set of KHF HKD videos.
