He learned how to survive on the ground. - - -- Danny Thanks for the post Danny. That is one of the UFC tapes I have not seen, so I was going by what I remember reading or hearing one time. It is true that a person should know how to handle a situation on the ground as well. But it is also true that in a real fight, the ground is not a place to be. One on one, it can be fine if you are a good grappler, but way too often there are others around. I've been on the ground pounding a guy when his buddy came up and started kicking me in the head. I'm glad he was kicking me like one kicks in kickball and in the back of the head and shoulders, rather than stomping on me while I was busy with his friend. A stomp can do a lot more damage than the kicks he was conecting with. Then he grabbed the metal bucket and my sweat pants got ripped off.....but I digress. (no, I'm not making this up.) Forms/ poomses are taught at the "right" level. I don't really see any problem with this at the lower ranks since there is not a lot of difference in the complexity of the combinations. BTW - The high rank classes do have sparring with "open head", and take downs leading to grappleing from time to time to keep your reflexes up. Smaller, more frequent steps, seems to be easier for students than "big chunks". >> 10 years ago I only had orange, green, red and black. But I also didn't take anyone under 9. Since then, I've lowered my age brackets to 6 then to 4. So now I have to have yellow, gold, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red, deputy black and black. It has worked very well, and now I use those new belts even for adults. Fewer belts mean more time with a belt, more belts means more promotions thus more stepping stones for the student, and they stay motivated easier. The fight you are thinking was Pete Williams who KO'd Coleman in overtime, again after Coleman was tired. It was a great kick, and the only time (As far as I recall) that a kick to the head has ended any fight in UFC. >> Mr. Smith did a roundhouse kick to Conan's head in Extreme Fighting ... which is not UFC but an offshoot of it. But he did KO him with it and win the fight. Hilland" Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 20:20:16 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: hapkido This is my first post on this group although I know many of the members from other groups, etc. My name is Jere R. Hilland and I hold a 5th dan in hapkido and a 4th dan in taekwondo. I was one of the many instructors this past weekend at the US Korean Martial Arts Federation Seminar which was held by my teacher, Master West, Daehan kidohae 8th dan. Although I knew many of the folks who attended I had the honor of meeting Mr. Michael Choi for the first time this weekend. A most talended and impressive young man. My friend Master Geoff Booth did an outstanding job in his class and he survived his birthday on Friday. All of the teachers did a great job and we learned a lot! In these days we see a lot of isolationism in hapkido, so it is nice to see a lot of folks get together who are not hung up on this concept and just want to practice and learn together without any hidden agendas. It is also amazing for me to see non-hapkidoin show up year after year just to learn something new. I will allow Mr. Choi to fill in the details from the weekend, but next time I hope to meet ya'all there!
