With the recent thread on Hapkido, it would be helpful if you could include the lineage of the chief instructor/owner of the school and their style (e.g., Kuk Sool Won, Hosinsul (sp?)). A little history of the art goes a long way. Do Hapkido practitioners generally switch from one style to another, if they have access to more than one? more so when they are beginners/intermediates? Thanks in advance. Not during testing :) But a few weeks ago the class consisted of a 3rd Dan, 2nd Dan, 1st Dan, a temporary Black Belt, and Me (a 6th Gup). I was pulled aside to get a taste of advanced basics, while the Dans and Temporary Black Belt where marched up and down the mat doing complicated kick/strike response combinations. There came a point when the others finished what they were doing and calmly watched me while I went through my current set, while the Instructor watched too. I suddenly felt like I had the weight of the world on me :) After class I asked one of the other students how I did. He summed it up nicely by saying that I looked pretty good for a 6th Gup :) Since then I've tried to remember that when I'm having a hard time with a technique, that I'm doing well if I'm doing the best that I can. Alain, I have no problems with this, but the thing about Maurice Smith was: he did not *want* to go to the ground. He wanted to fight on his feet, wailing away. He had very little choice since he got taken down. Likewise, while one may not choose to go to the ground in a multi-attacker, street fight situation, one may have no choice. If you're fighting a grappler and they want to take you down, the UFCs have shown pretty convincingly that in the absence of weapons, this will happen a large percentage of the time. On the other hand, they have also shown that a stand up fighter who knows ground defense can eventually finish the fight the way they want, on their feet, if they know how to defend themselves on the ground. Thus, tit seems prudent to understand ground grappling. - -- Danny ________________________________________________________________ | Danny Abramovitch E-mail: danny@hpl.hp.com | | Hewlett-Packard Labs Voice: (650) 857-3806 | | 1501 Page Mill Road, M/S 4U-12 FAX: (650) 857-7724 | | Palo Alto, CA 94304-1126 | | | | ``The plural of anecdote is not data.'' -- Author Unknown | |________________________________________________________________| ------------------------------ From: Ken McDonough Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 09:35:35 -0800 (PST) Subject: the_dojang: Re: good bye=try these lists It is true that the Kuk Sool list is a good list. Mr. Lee does a good job moderating. There are additional fine martial arts lists, e.g., the Dojang- Digest and Martial Science lists run by Mr. Terry and Mr. Talbott, respectively. There are outstanding martial artists on these lists and there is a reciprocal agreement. You can post to any of these lists freely and openly. Just passing the word.
