Sir-- Issuing geub certificates here in Korea really is rare. My Taekwondo sabumnim does issue keub certificates, but I think it's more as a formality to help keep the soldiers and dependents enrolled in his classes keep track of where they are "officially" in the case that they move away from Yongsan. It might take less time to achieve first dan, but that normally depends on how many times a week you train. Since I've arrived in April 1999, some people joined the class as white belts after me (by a couple months) and are testing with me in April at Kukkiwon. (A side note for anyone who's wondering how much time I myself spent training here: It's been close to a year now...however, I've been in Taekwondo for almost four years and am just now getting my black belt. Being under an instructor in the States who didn't necessarily prioritize properly [good man all the same though], PCSing overseas to Korea, and a broken toe slowed me down along with lack of effort at some points so far.) Actually, the last statement should have been reworded. If you are not a dan holder but show a lot of interest in learning and busting your butt off, your Sabumnim will notice and take interest in giving you what you need to get your black belt. Some people might think that your worth as a potential person is higher if you hold a dan rank, but that really is the wrong train of thought to be having. A lot of Korean instructors over here, especially those who have worked with MWR to bring the Korean martial arts classes to soldiers and their families, take an avid interest in teaching students and giving them the knowledge to go get their black belt. My former HKD Sabumnim still teaches at the high school, and he still fusses at the color belts for not trying hard enough while fussing at the black belts for slacking off. My current TKD Sabumnim...waaaaaaaaaaah...he fusses at the color belts for everything and the black belts for everything and then some. However, his main focus during class is on we color belts. In fact, the black belts often work together by themselves to learn forms. We receive more assistance from Sabumnim becauase he wants to see us perform well at our black belt test. It's all a matter of the person teaching the class. (Sorry for dragging on - I know Ray mentioned earlier to keep the messages short. I spent more than a few hours in the Hannam village gym practicing Hapkido. I worked in the Walker Center on Yongsan South Post (as does my Sabumnim), and we practiced most week days in the main post gym. Weekends were either at one of our Kwanjangnim's schools in Uijongbu, or Hannam Village.
