For a few issues the question of weapons training has been discussed...the questrion has come up as to why Grand Masters and Masters in TKD do not teach weapons...the answer is simple and has been told to me in conversation by a number of Grand Masters and Masters...Tae Kwon Do is The Way of Foot and Hand...not weapons...it is empty hand training...that is what their art style is ...that is what they teach in the purest sense...they believe it is important for one to learn and become proficcient with empty hands before progressing to weapons: one art at a time...however...I do not know of any that will stop you from learning weapons on your own...as a matter of fact...I have heard many of the instructors, wen asked by students about weapons training state something similiar to this: "Not teach weapons; Teach Tae Kwon Do. Maybe you see (they point at one of the black belts) him/her. You ask them. Maybe they help you." They may not be willing to teach you themselves because of their dedication to the one art, but they will usually, not in all cases, no one or more of their students that trains with weapons and steer you in that direction. I do not know of any Grand Master or Korean Master/Junior Master that is not very profficient with weapons...they are simply not the art style they teach. I would like to offer this warning to all of you thinking of pursuing weapons training...especially gups. If you find a separate school to study another art form, ie weapons, be aware that your present instructor will probably force you to make a choice between his/her training and your alteranate training. It has to do with dedication and loyalty to your instructor and trusting your instructor knows the best way for you to train to reach your potential. Also, most, NOT ALL, will find it difficult to become profficient training in two arts at the same time as opposed to reaching a peak in one then pursuing the alternate while continuing the first or foregoing the first. It is difficult enough to learn and execute the proper techniques with precision and power wiht empty hands, but to try and use hand extensions (weapons) makes it all the more difficult to learn the precision and proper execution. The two types of training may come in conflict with each other and hinder your progression in the arts. Just my humble advise: Learn your empty hand first...if weapons is your interest, learn them on the side from someone affiliated with your instructor or Do Jang...if you are a Gup rank, learn the basics and practice them slowly and leisurely, don't be in a rush...When you become a Dan rank, take the weapons training to higher levels, but continue your base art...both will be enhanced greatly. I'll probably be able to go watch (not compete - yes, I do somewhat resemble a cautious ttakari [chiken]) as that will be the last tournament I'll be able to attend here in Korea before I go back to the States. P.S. - Those of you in Korea and WTF TKD affiliated, the Osan Open tournament should be in May again, no? Anybody who might have heard stuff about that, please drop a line or two!
