That may be a bit of a sore subject, but coming from a Christian perspective, I would tend to avoid a Kung Fu school because of it's religious implications. I know - I'm probably one of the only people that would make that a criteria, but for kids it's important to me. If that's not an issue for someone, then the particular style, teacher's ability to interact well with kids, and an affiliation with an Association are important to me. I like Korean styles. The Association is an important concern for me because despite what many will say, I feel promotions and curriculum are more standardized and less subjective. I also like the fact that for large organizations, if I relocate, which is likely in my area (military), I don't have to start over and have my kids go through that adjustment. There are several large Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do organizations that provide that benefit, and I'm learning the same is true of TKD, Hapkido, and others. Fees and family plans would probably be next. The other things tend to just work themselves out. Soo Bahk!! Please keep the answers short in a top ten list fashion (if not, ok). For example: a. Teacher's philosophy and approach. For example, should a Master directly teach or just have his black belts teach ? b. Contracts or no contracts. c. Driving distance. d. Reasonable fee structure. e. Various classes f. And so forth. g. Importance of Association affiliation. h. Should the teaching curriculum be clearly spelled out or left up to the teacher's discretion. i. I though your post(s) was excellent. I was stating that posters on the Kuk Sool Won list were reacting emotionally to various opinions from others (yours excluded). The problem with lists is that you cant write every nuance and hear the tone in one's voice. Your posts were on point, made sense, and keep it up. You should never apologize for sharing your thoughts and beliefs. Thanks again. Ken McDonough __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! From what I've read here and elsewhere, the order of belt colors varies from one style to another, even from one school to another. Yours, I guess, probably goes from brown to red before black, right? Or something like that. At my school, 3rd gup is red, 2nd gup is brown and 1st gup is brown with black stripe. So, I've just retired my red belt. I'm not sure what the time or number of classes requirements are for 1st gup, but I am hoping to be ready to test for Black Belt by next summer (2001) when our Grandmaster is touring New England. But I'm not going to worry about testing for now. I am competing at the Northern Rhode Island Karate Championships on March 25, at Bryant College. So, I will be concentrating on forms and sparring for the next couple of weeks. Again, congrats on your test, Donna. Pil Seung, Stan Wojcoski ------------------------------ From: "G. After all being from Australia means that I take the long way home and getting in an early report on the seminar wasn't possible. I have always enjoyed making the drip "Up South" well it is from Downunda, and this was not only because of the friendly southern welcome but also because of the high quality of the Hapkido and other martial arts that are demonstrated/taught/learnt from attending these seminars. Congratulations to the newly promoted Masters, Jere Hilland, James Allison, as well as all those who earnt their new promotions. It was also a pleasure to meet Master Mac and catch up with old faces from all other the US of A. The weekend was a great chance to get on the mat and I think possibly the biggest one yet, with even more people trying very hard to land on a piece of the floor that wasn't already occupied by someone else. It was refreshing to be able to mix it up with people from all styles without the ego or politics, at to sit back and enjoy the camaraderie. This is one of the seminars that you really need to attend, make it a reward to yourself to make it to one of the down south (or Up South) seminars! Again it was a pleasure to say G'Day to some old friends and make new ones, and I really enjoyed being apart of the 11th International Seminar, lookin' forward to a mighty fine time in August. Please provide your analysis of what you would do in similar situation (serious replies--although the topic is hilarious). 1. When to attack. 2. What to do when verbal skills fail. 3. What to do to control fear or adrenalin rush. 4. Martial arts opinions/philosophy. Preface: Today, March 7, 2000, I am down in the basement doing mundane stuff, you know cleanin' out the basement. Sort of like "wax on, wax off." But no storyline. All of a sudden I receive a pleasant telephone call from a well regarded martial artist. Out of nowhere. What a pleasant surprise ! Made my day. After the telephone call (coupled with the last episode of the Sopranos on HBO) I had this thought about a true life event. It actually turned out to be a turning point in my life. Story. Circa 1971. Upstate bar, just over the New Jersey line (at that time the drinking laws in New Jersey were 21 vs. New York=18, so New Jersey people headed for upstate New York just over the line). I was with my friends and my first true love, Carol K (Carol=hi wherever you are). Some guy wants to dance with Carol--which is ok (Carol was a stunning, statuesque red headed woman--with intelligence). But, she politely says no. He can't accept that. Thinks my friend is laughing at him. I try to calm him down. He wants to fight. Won't listen to any effort to descalate the situation. I turn slightly away. He clocks (typical sucker punch) me breaking my jaw. I of course hit him back. Then his friend hits me over the head with a beer bottle (about 6 stitches/scars are still in my forehead). The bouncer picks me up and throws me down a flight of stairs trying to break it all up (funny stuff huh ?). As I lay in the hospital bed I am thinking I better get an education. My life is going nowhere. Question: I often think how I would handle a similar situation now. How would you handle that situation regarding: a. When to attack. b. What to do when verbal skills fail. c. How do you control your fear and adrenalin. d. Martial arts opinions. You can answer here or privately to maganda44@yahoo.mail. Note: I already know I should not have looked away. Thanks, Ken McDonough P.S. I ended up at college in Michigan one year later. I now pay my taxes. P.S. 2. I now have a perfect bite since my jaw was properly reset. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! I like it. Your not the only one who would use the approach below. Let me explain. There is a respected martial artist out of New York. His name is Professor James. He has taken over the Vee Arnis Jitsu system formerly headed by Professor Vee, a filipino martial artist. The system is an eclectic blend of martial arts designed around street fighting and survival. Recently Professor James came out with two videos entitled, "Take it to Them" and "Stop Techniques." In short, the premise is that you may be in a situation where no matter what you do you know the person is going to do you harm. You are just a target and there is no rationale reason why it is happening. Logic, escape, and pleading wont help. The insane guy is gonna do you since he needs to ventilate physically on your head. So, what do you do. According to Professor James you "Take it to Them". Your technique is similar to what he would teach. He has several techniques but the overriding them is to keep your hands up in a passive fashion, try using verbal descalating techniques--and if that does not work=Take it to Them. The theory above is something difficult to deal with. Since we are always taught to not be aggressive. However, even today I think about that event and I wish I would have initiated the attack. I may not have spent time in a hospital bed or my jaw wired for 6 weeks. But, again I have a perfect bite and nice teeth today. So there is a happy ending. Thanks again.
