There seems to be some evidence that both KukSoolWon and HwaRangDo were at one time 'kwans' or semi-independent schools under the system of Hapkido, until their kwan leaders or kwanjangs broke from Hapkido and founded their own arts. Does this theory fit in with or is it contradicted by the history you've provided? Again, not trying to cast aspersions; I really want to learn. From: "Jeff Harrison" Subject: APOLOGY AND RETRACTION (was Re: Grandmaster Suh's visit to Korea!) In an effort to englighten you, my friends, on issues concerning Kuk Sool Won and to put to rest rumors that have been running rampant, i wrote the e-mail attached hereinbelow. I wrote the e- mail based upon what I had believed that my Kwanjangnim had told me. However, after a lengthy telephone conversation with my Kwanjangnim today on the subject of my email, I came to realize that I had misinterpreted and misunderstood the remarks of my Kwanjangnim. Although I had nothing but the best intentions, and even though I acted without malice, without intent to cause harm to anyone, and did not knowingly forward false information on this subject, it appears that, due to errors on my part I wrongly attributed statements to my Kwanjangnim that he did not, in fact, make. As a result of my misunderstandings and misinterpretations, it appears that people have been offended and are upset at both me (rightly so) and at my Kwanjangnim (unfairly so). My mistakes were my own, and any inaccuracies in my statement are due to my shortcomings and should not be attributed in any way to my Kwanjangnim. In light of the foregoing, I take this opportunity to issue this public apology to all of you for any wrong impressions or conclusions you may have had or reached as a result of the letter attached hereunder. More specifically and most especially, I wish to offer my public apologies to Grandmaster Suh in Hyuk Chiefmaster Seo In Sun, and Master Lee Choon Kwang for any stress, pain, discomfort, burden, ill-feelings or any other negative feelings or situations that may have come about as a result of my email. I spoke out of school and realize that it is not my right, privilege, duty, or prerogative to make statements concerning the organization of Kuk Sool Won or any of the practitioners thereof. Nor is it my place to repeat any thing that I may hear, regardless of whether it is correct information or not. Again, I apologize. I am truly sorry. In addition to my public apologies, I hereby make a public retraction of the letter copied below. As an attorney, I am well aware of the principle, "It is impossible to unring a bell." Once something is said, it is said. Be that as it may, I would ask you all to see that said mail does not get passed along any further. When replying to the original or to this email, please take care to edit your response and delete said portion. If you forwarded my previous mail to anyone else, please send them a copy of this email as well. In addition, please be use your best efforts to disregard the entire contents of said email. I will not be posting anything further to this list regarding the organization of Kuk Sool Won or its leaders (collectively and individually). Best regards and best wishes to all. It may not exactly be on-topic, but it is worth the read for such an historical event. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/DailyNews/karmapa000309.html#graphic I am hopeful that he may decide to travel the world and lecture like the Dalai Lama, who I had the distinct pleasure of seeing in person just over 10 years ago. I must say that it warms my heart to see the Karmapa in a place that will only support and encourage his growth.
