He used to study under GM Ji. Now he calls his art HAPMUDO. According the the Hapmudo folks, it is Aikido, Jujitsu, Taichi, Kum Do, Kung Fu, Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do, all wrapped in one. Very interesting, almost undescribable, I guess you would have to see it yourself. I met Master Yong Sung Lee back in 1994 when he was teaching just plain old Hapkido, not sure of his age, but he must be pretty old to have mastered all of those arts. I was always led to believe (from the students at the school) that Master Changs teacher was GM Ji. I never asked Master Chang directly who his teacher was so you couldd be right. Whoever taught him did a good job because I have much respect for Master Changs abilities and his Hapkido school. Mark ------------------------------ From: Ann-Marie White Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 14:16:47 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: hang time Hello everyone: I'm a yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do (tho' hopefully tomorrow I'll become a green stripe... we find out the results of our promotions test then). I'm having problems with my jump kicks and my jumping spinning kicks. It's not that I can't jump into the air, it's that I come down way too fast to get a kick off in any powerful way. I'm trying to improve my jumping ability by dead leaping (jumping from ready stance without any run) over increasingly higer obstacles and coming down on the other side in a fighting stance. That seems to be helping some since I usually have enough time to twist in the air and land correctly. Occassionaly, when I'm being super coordinated, I can even get a side kick off. Are there any other exercises that you guys can suggest so that I can increase the height of my jumps and my "hang time"? Being a rather small woman in stature, my goal is twofold: 1) to be able leap up throw a front kick, roundhouse kick, or crescent kick to the head of much taller classmates while sparring. 2)to be able to do the same thing against an attacker and give myself time to get away. Any advice on exercises I can try will be much appreciated. Thanks, Ann-Marie ------------------------------ From: "Christopher Spiller" Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 20:10:17 GMT Subject: the_dojang: ITC forms question Since I know there are at least a couple members of the ITC on this list I thought I'd ask a question regarding their forms practice. I know they practice the Chang Hun (ITF) patterns but I have recently met an individual who used to be a member of the ITC. He showed me a couple of the patterns (Chon Ji, Dan Gun) and they are DIFFERENT. I don't mean differences like preparation and body mechanics, I mean different like that's NOT Chon Ji. Several techniques had been added, the diagram the pattern follows had been changed, etc. Has the ITC really changed the patterns that much? I ask because he ALSO said that he and his brother are "forming a new style" and I am thinking that perhaps these are HIS changes and for some reason he just said the ITC had done them. As far as making a new style is concerned, well he's a good black belt - I THINK he may even be a first dan but he was wearing a poom belt (half red and half black) ;) - but he's no General Choi; Choi, Young Sul; Ji, Han Jae; etc. Taekwon, Chris "Every experience of beauty points to infinity." I follow a master I deal with personally and trust, he belongs to an organization with which he has personal involvement, and he's free to stay with that organization or leave at any time. No one has trademarked the Hapkido name or logo, no one is fighting to get their Hapkido organization and no one else's recognized by the Olympic committee, there's no rumors of this or that grand master coming to town to take over the art, etc. As far as learning from one another, that's up to each of us as individual practicioners. I remember when Lotus was bought out by IBM. There were official plans underway to integrate the two companies, but as someone said, the real integration was already taking place as the folks who did the real work spoke with contacts they'd already made at the other company, made plans to get together, see where their projects fit in, etc. I'd rather have my instructor teach us KukSool techniques or visit a class on my own than have the Grand Poobah tell us we're now dropping these techniques and we're learning those, and you'd better learn them in time for your next belt test. I trust my instructor to make the best decisions for me and for the people he personally teaches several times a week.
