I recognize the review format, because they have a review of my Hapkido Hoshinsul video at that site too. That is what Ken posted, and it was for information purposes, he does not receive anything from Mr. James or Vee Arnis Jitsu. If you want to check out the site go to: http://www.altinet.net/~karate And then check reviews. If you want to check out their review of my video, go to: http://www.altinet.net/~karate/burrese.htm (It's review three hundred and something) Hope this cleared that up. His informational literature states he has black belts in Aki-Jitsu, Kempo, and Arnis. So, even though he advertises his hand to hand fighting as "Streetfighting," it has been influenced by his years of formal MA training as well. Bob, if you are out here, send me an e-mail. David Li told me you were here. Master Hal Whalen and I have tried to figure out if you are the Robert Follet that he studied Taekwondo under in Quincy nearly twenty-five years ago. You two should talk. If Bob hasn't spoken up out here yet, he has a very interesting back ground, with black belts in several different original Kwans from his military days in Korea. He also kicked my butt pretty well in the old geezer's division of a state championship about five or so years ago. However, my former Praying Mantis Kung Fu instructor, upon seeing a Tang Soo Do demonstration remarked that it was similar to Kung Fu. Why? Well, not because of the techniques themselves but more because of some of the strategy used in sparring and the fact that most techniques were thrown in groups of three's (Chinese stylists like to make sure they hit their opponents). This man is from Hong Kong and has been training since he was about five. It didn't look like that much of a similarity to me, but... Taekwon, Chris "Every experience of beauty points to infinity." My TSD instructor and I have begun studying T'ai Chi, and many things seem to be related, especially T'ai Chi's chin na and TSD's ho sin sool (wrist grabs, or self-defense), and TSD's chil sung and uro forms. So far, the T'ai Chi training seems to be helping both of us better understand many of the techniques in TSD and perform them more effectively. > Unfortunately I have never studied Wing Chun. Can anyone else shed any light on this? A friend was an original student under Hwang Kee back in the late 50s. He indicated that GM Hwang indicated that Tang Soo Do (or Soo Bahk Do) were strontly influenced by Chinese Kung Fu. He then went on to study Chinese Kung Fu, various elements of it, and found little to no relationship. He told me he then realized that GM Hwang had a great flair for marketing. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 11:42:40 PST Subject: Re: the_dojang: Re: Tang Soo Do and Wing Chun > I've been lurking for a while but this is my first post. Chin Na is very interesting. Seldom taught as a style unto itself, nor it is really a part of Tai Chi. More like the relationship Hoshinsul has to TKD, TSD, SBD, etc (as you indicated). I suspect that Chin Na influenced JuJutsu or vice versa. It does seem that in later years GM Hwang has gone back a bit to his Hwa Soo Do roots (the art he taught in 1945) and brought that influence into Soo Bahk Do.
