I didn't think that anyone on the list would try to take advantage of Mr Terry's kindness. If you want to help the VAJ company, that's OK, but if I understood well, this list's owner and its members are in the whole thing to unselfishly share their knowledge with others as well as to learn something about Korean MA.> Response: First, thanks to Master Alain Burrese who properly placed into perspective the video review. Second, readers will note that I clearly indicated that I was forwarding a review of a "martial arts" video. Third, my intent was to share information since this is a martial arts forum. I receive no remuneration for posting a review of a particular video. I believe I once forwarded a review of Master Burrese's video months ago and he did not forward to me a royalty check. This forum is great for sharing of information and to encourage discussion. I won't answer the rest of the poster's post since I merely wanted to share information with readers and not engage in a negative debate. Unfortunately the nature of lists is that not all nuances and explanations are easily explainable. More to follow. Ken McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm a 2nd gup (brown belt) in Hapkido and have studied the art for about three years and also have some limited exposure to other arts (esp. Ju Jutsu, but also some Aikido, Karate, TSD). I've been a lurker on this list for the majority of that time and I've been constantly impressed with the experience and knowledge of the people on this list> Brief Response: Phil, your post was well done. There are Masters on this list who could provide you a more reasoned response than I. Nevertheless, one point I would clarify is that a Western approach would use the traditional arts in their training. However, they would take the traditional teachings and techniques and apply it to a Western style scenario, re: How to react to potential Muggings, bar fights, attacks in elevators, staircases, streets. Actually, that is why I posted the video review on Vee Arnis Jitsu. It takes some traditional martial arts like Jiu Jitsu, Arnis/Escrima, Chinese Wing Chun, Judo,Korean arts, and uses an eclectic approach to defending yourself in a Western society. Personally, I do think it is good to keep the traditional teachings and a formal instruction method in place. I also think it would be wise to broaden the curriculum to include scenarios in a Western environment. For example, compare taking a subway train in downtown Pusan, South Korea late at night versus taking a subway in Manhatten late at night. Which do you think is more threatening ? Which scenario involves possible street thugs, gang bangers, knife wielders, drug addicts, psychos, and so forth ? Ken McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If we're here to gain from others' experience, I'd rather hear from someone I trust (based on several months of posts) regarding a video before I plunk down 35 bucks for a video based on a self-ad on their website. I believe the purpose of the mail list has been served. I also don't believe there's anything in the Dojang Digest ground rules that precludes a post of that nature. Ken, thanks - Soo Bahk!!
