His first school failed, in his own words then Koreans were looking for something more Japanese like. He met with Won Kuk Lee (founder of Tang Soo Do - in 1944 under permission of the Japanese - later went on to found Chung Do Kwan) and Sang Sup Chun (Kong Soo Do). After meeting them he went with the Okinawan forms (which by his own words he had learned from a book) started teaching the modified Okinawan (likely Japanese Shotokan) forms. Before anyone gripes, lets get real. If the forms were taught in the same order as Funikoshi, then they are Shotokan based (Funikoshi changed the order and numbering of the Pyung/Pinan/Heinan/ forms). If it was the Original Okinawan they'd be in a different order. This should have also mixed well with the Okinawan Karate book that Hwang Kee found and studied. The book most likely to have been in the library at that time was the first book on Karate, "To Te" published in 1922, was of course Funikoshi's, most works after that until after the war were pretty much based on Funikoshi's work. At that point and for many years Tang Soo Do contained 2 Kung Fu Forms taught at its advanced ranks (again this was likely Hwang Kee's Base forms for Hwa Soo Do). Depending on what school one is in will show whether or not they're still taught. The form I've identified were: Tae Kuk Kwon (in Chinese Tai Chi Chuan) - a short version of Yang Style So Rim Jahng Kwan or Jang Kwon (in Chinese Chang Quan) - Northern Shaolin Long Fist Form Dam Toi (in Chinese Tan Tui) - Springy Legs form of Kung Fu BTW to avoid confusion. I'm going by the original form name and movements. If someone has renamed an existing form, or created a new form with these same names. It may not be the form I'm referring to. For those interested I'll be putting up a website soon with a myriad of form interrelations. When live the URL will be posted here Dave Hacker 1st dan Chung Su and an avid historian / researcher. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 17:10:08 PST Subject: Re: the_dojang: Re: > > I am interested in beginning my studies of Hapkido, and I am > > currently trying to locate an instructor in my area. Yes, that is my guess, too. But we just don't know. What is apparent tho is that GM Hwang studied at the Chung Do Kwan for awhile. Some claim the records indicate up to green belt, but ...
