Here's the situation: My wife and I are partners in a school with another martial artist. Our partner teached Shorin-Ryu and Kenjutsu, my wife and I are Tang Soo Do. I'm in the service, so my time at the school is limited - also, I am junior to my wife - she's third dan, I'm second. She also, quite frankly, is a much better teacher than I. The problem? Other than kids, it's real tough to get folks to sign up for classes. At least three or four times a week, someone will come in, express interest in Tang Soo Do, and then, when they realize that my wife is the instructor they get this look....and that's the end of the interest. My partner's classes tend to be much more tournament-oriented, so he even tries to steer those who seem to be looking for a more traditional class to our system, and yet anyone (alright, any male) between the ages of 15 and 35 just is not interested. Now, on some levels, that's ok -- let's face it, kid's classes pay the rent. Families are generally more stable as customers than young men. More to the point, if a mind is that closed, I am not sure I want them as a student, because it's usually a warning of other problems yet to surface. But it is very difficult, especially from a self-worth standpoint. How do you other female instructors address this? We are located at 2109 Taraval Street (between 31st and 32nd Avenues) in the Sunset District. If you want to come watch an advanced class to see the direction of our curriculum, come to class on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 8pm. Though our school is called Karate Club (Master Jino Kang also has a degree in Kyokushin) we teach Hapkido as taught by the late Kuksanim Myong Jae Nam, founder of the International Hapkido Federation. Our Hapkido tends to be more circular in style than some other schools, but you can be the judge when you come in. Jino Kang is a 5th Dan master who has been training for over 35 years; he is the son of GM Kang Myung Sung, close friend and training partner of the IHF founder. I look forward to seeing you there! Also how are the Kuk Sool Won textbooks??? As always any info will be greatly appreciated. " Chris....I own several of the books you mentioned. The books are well produced, with excellent organization and have lots of detailed photographs. Each is worth its individual price. I question whether you need or want the whole collection. As it is my belief that there is some duplication and $850.00 is a ton of money. You will not have any complaints about any book, but might seek some additional advice about the need for all of them. Vic Cushing >>My name is Chris Harris. I own the set of Kuk Sool won test books and the book the Dr. Kimm has produced. there are some variations in some of the techniques and in Dr. Kimm's book there are no hyungs demonstrated. both books cover kicks, strikes, blocks, and the self-defense techniques of this style. Dr. Kimm's book does cover things in more detail, it may be the educator in him reaching out. Other than that which I have listed, the books are a great supplement to the instruction that you will receive in the dojang. peace, Chris Kuk Sul Hapkido ------------------------------ From: "Anthony or Clare Boyd" Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 14:34:26 +0900 Subject: the_dojang: Learning to do the impossible I have a question for all the kicking specialists on this list. I am trying to refine a difficult element of an enjoyable sword form. Recently I sought advice and encouragement from others that know this form and discovered that no one I know seems able to perform this maneuver correctly. While that was a relief in one sense it left me with no additional clues as to how to nail it. What is the maneuver? I do not call it 'doing the impossible' for no reason. The basic idea is to go from a standing guard position to a jump kick which ends in a deep stance. The details are the the problem. All of these individual motions are to be performed simultaneously: a) perform a jumping rearward sidekick (push kick) with right foot. This foot begins in the forward position of the natural stance. ( half one foot ahead of the left foot in a natural standing state) b) bring left knee up to a 90 degree bend c) strike with sword - raise from guard to overhead redirection (soft parry - point toward right) to downward diagonal cut (upper left to lower right), ki-hap d) Keep body aligned to face the front The landing is in the deep, short stance called so-doe-sey which basically has both legs at 90 degree bends, this time with left leg forward and right leg under, right knee off the ground two fists back from left heel, back straight. What are common problems? Most people do not execute a push kick but instead perform a hook kick at their own butt. Amusing but lacking the combat edge the form requires. Anyone with the Turtle Press video on Hai Dong Gumdo can clearly see the common error in this form (Yedo Gum-pup #6) as they are kind enough to show the jump from the rear. The demonstrating gumdo-in is Chung Ju-hee. She performs yedo 6 and then yedo 8 on the tape. What is my problem? My legs corkscrew off center and align themselves 45 degrees from true. My left knee rises at my 2 oclock and my right foot kicks out at my 7 o'clock. As I descend from the kicking postion into the landing my kicking leg retracts as it ought to but switches from 7:00 to 4:00 leaving me off balance and a bit annoyed. My knee corrects to the proper 12:00 position. What *is* the question? My question is does anyone have a suggestion about this or is my joking reference to the impossible actually the truth? I have tried visualizing the correct result and have found a bit of improvement. I have tried isolating the individual elements and have found this to only confuse me. I have been tempted to have attackers run at me so that I can try to actually kick the rearward villain but I know that my kwanchang nim would frown upon such irresponsible practice methods. I guess it's just a sign of how much I would like to perfect this maneuver that I would think of such an option.
