Is there a method to soften it up, so that it stays tied better, and is it appropriate to do so? Thanks much. >> hi jack! most folks tell you not to wash your belt, that it's inappropriate to do so. with that said... i used to soak my colored belts in vinegar to set the dye, and then wash them. they have a tendency to shrink, though, in the washer, so you may want to consider just rinsing it under tap. this seemed to soften mine up a bit. however, some idiot black belts i've known have tied their's to the car and gone for a drive :). your son's yellow belt might not be so yellow if you choose this method ;). good luck, melinda ChunjiDo -pe rsonal homepage http://hometown.aol.com/chunjido/homehtmlindex.html Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply - business page http://hometown.aol.com/chajonshim/ma4sale.html Paidforsurf.com - - Main - get paid 75cents/hr to surf the net...i do! I would be very interested in your observations about the similarities and differences between Aikjitsu and Hapkido. Given their common roots I would imagine there are a lot of similarities. I am curious about significant differences in technique, basic motion, and philosophy. You may consider joining and all women's m.a. list I'm on, to discuss this in further detail. It's a topic which has been discussed in the past and there is a lot of experience and wisdom on that list. :^) If you want info on joining, please e-mail me privately. I think you sum it up well when you say you're not sure if you want that type of student in your school. From where I stand, YOU DON'T!:^) I deal with it by doing what I do best. Teaching. I simply teach the men who are there. I demand respect while I am doing so. The rest is up to them. If they aren't willing to learn from me, that's absolutely fine. They can go elsewhere. This would not be an indication of my value as an instructor or a martial artist. It would say nothing about me at all. It would speak volumes about them. Have you considered teaching a 'women's only' class? That's a whole market I'm trying to tap in to. There are a lot of women who wouldn't consider entering a co-ed dojang, who would feel comfortable and enjoy learning in a female only environment. I think that women's only m.a. classes and schools are great for many women for this reason. Not only would it bring in more students for your school, but it would be helping a population learn martial arts that might otherwise never have taken the opportunity. Good luck! I wish you all the best! Laura - - -- Laura, I have a question for you. You say that you would not want a male student who does not want to learn from a female instructor, and that it reflects bad upon them, but you support a female who would not want to learn from a male instructor(your point about a female only class). How are these two things different?
