THANK YOU. Last night (03/28/00) I had Tae Kwon Do testing to achieve my Yellow Belt (7th Gup). The Testing Criteria included: - Form (Poomse) Palgwe Il Chung - 10 Intermediate Basic Kicking - 5 Counter Attacks - 7 Basic One Steps - 4 Sets of 3/2 Steps - 5 Sparring Techniques - Self Defense - Korean Terminology for kicks, blocks, uniform, gym, Master Instructor, Offense, Loud Yell - Questions and Code - Breaking (Turning Side Kick) I PASSED and was awarded my Yellow Belt Last night. I know now that if I can achieve a breaking using a turning side kick, the kick I need the most work on, I can achieve any breaking. You show great courage and restraint. < So, the purpose of sharing this with you all is - does it make a difference? Can we make < a difference? Yes you did make a differance. You stood up for someone that needed it. That is the differance between walking the walk or just talking the talk. No matter what else happens remember that you took a stand against injustice. That is what is important. < It seems so easy to offer platitudes and recycle pearls of wisdom but in the reality of < the situation, what really gets accomplished? In many cases this is exactly true nothing does happen. Not because of your actions but because she is unwilliing to take action. You gave her the opertunity to leave him and go to the hospital or police. That she didn't take it is not your fault. She needs more help then you could give in that situation. But that doesn't detract from the fact that you stood up for someone that needed your help. If this ever happens again the person might take the oppertunity. Then something will be done for her. But the fact is even if you called the police for her, if she doesn't take steps to protect herself from him then you have done all you can. < I am not totally distressed over this. (long but worth Bravo to Mrs. West for such a thoughtful post. I have been perusing the conversation regarding all women dojangs with some interest and she has made a very significant critique of the issue. While I do think there is validity in same sex education (girls apparently do better scholastically and boys improve socially in single sex educational settings) in Martial Arts there is a necessity for training with members of the opposite sex, especially for women's self defense. Same sex classes and seminars are fine, and probably very beneficial, but if one is training to defend themselves from a larger opponent who is probably going to be a man then they should probably practice on a partner who is similar. Teachers should have the students' best interests in mind but I hesitate to say that these will be determined by political ideology. The above being said I am afraid that I think this particular thread is rapidly approaching an impasse. There are some people who use feminism as a lens through which they view the entire world. This is NOT meant as a flame by any means. Perhaps it's time for all parties to take a step back and take a critical look at what they think. Critical doesn't mean "negative", it just means to critique. According to the author G.K. Chesterton, having an open mind is like having an open mouth - it's only use is to close down on something worthwhile. Many of us never tire of critiquing our techniques to see if they work but critiquing our beliefs is a little more difficult. By the way, I have trainind for nearly fourteen years under a husband and wife team. The wife is one of the best instructors I have ever seen. She has a great ability to analyze techniques and tell you exactly what you are doing wrong and what you need to do to fix it. Far from having students not want to learn from her we look forward to having her in class, especially when preparing for a test. She also teaches women's self defense seminars on a fairly regular basis which introduce many women to MA's who otherwise would never even consider stepping into a dojang. She also was around in "the olden days" and has told me about some of the tournaments she went to, training as one of a handful of women in a class of fifty men, etc. She stuck it out with the perseverence that TKD is supposed to teach. She encourages both the men and the women in her classes to stick with their training, set goals, and achieve them. That's not a feminist teaching method it's a GOOD teaching method. Well, end of monologue. Again, I am not trying to offend anyone and hope no one takes it that way. Taekwon, Chris "Every experience of beauty points to infinity."
