Ya know, I used to think this was sad, but at this point (some 3 years later) it is almost funny. No need to say more, the attached speaks volumes... But not to worry, no one here EVER needs worry about being unsubed from this list for posting to another list or newsgroup. I suppose you feel other boycotts by other organizations are equally as childish, when for example greenpeace asks us to boycott canned tuna because they catch and kill dolphins, or when the US boycotts products from Cuba or North Korea for their behavior. But like we said earlier, good luck with your future martial arts endeavors, and we hope that you enjoy DD, the list that 99% of its members delete without opening as soon as it hits their mailbox, 99% of the time. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Barnett" To: "Korean Martial Arts" ; Sent: Thursday, March 30, 2000 5:13 PM Subject: Re: help - distribution list Yes I posted a thankyou on the dojang, as member of that list were also helpful in giving advice on my torn ham-string. I really never believed any of the threads that ran all 3 lists about being kicked off of tkd-net for posting elsewhere, as I couldn't believe real martial artists would behave so childishly. All 3 lists have been a great asset to me and others as all have members who definitely have much more knowledge than I do. Having been a member of both lists off an on since both were started, its really hard to make a choice. I guess by tkd-nets childish policy - you have made it for me. Thanks for all the info, I will miss it. But I choose NOT to play politics and participate in any childish games. judy Barnett Korean Martial Arts wrote: > Yes, you posted on Dojang Digest, a list that we are boycotting due to the > unethical behavior of DD's owner, Ray Terry. I have on occasion introduced myself as "Rick Foley" to have the other person, usually 10 years my junior, reply "I'm MASTER Queeblat". It seems unseemly to introduce yourself as such. I never heard my instructor introduce himself as "Master". We always addressed him as sabumnim, and sun seung nim, but never master. But we always referred to him as "master" if we discussed him among ourselves or with others. One day came, after my 5th dan test, when he referred to me as Master Foley. The other black belts and students in the school started to refer to me as Master Foley, but when they talked to me it was almost always Foley Sabumnim. In my own school, I prefer to be called sabumnim. Rick Foley PS. Did anybody ever get a Korean translation of "Master"? Even when my instructor gave me a desk plate, it said "Master" phonetically in Korean. When I asked him about it, he said "master" was the accepted term. Sorta like u-shape jireugi. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 22:16:50 PST Subject: the_dojang: Korean-American community FYI... Ray A really good starting point is the website www.kahs.org for the Korean American Historical Society they have an extensive links section which lists organizations, publications and educational resources both Korean/American and Asian/American. In California, you might want to contact the Korean American Coalition (213) 365-5999 and the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles In terms of newspapers, you can start with Joong Ang Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, Korea Times and Korea Herald. You can easily find their web urls by searching the web. Richards" Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 00:51:48 -0500 Subject: the_dojang: Masters Dear Andy, I am a Sam Dan in Tang Soo Do. I will soon have enough time in grade, and BASIC knowledge of the criteria to advance to Sah Dan. This will mean my new belt will contain a central red stripe (master in Tang Soo Do). Right now I have one(1) student taking private lessons (my wife). By her own choice, my wife has taken to addressing me as sahbumnim during our lesson, and "honey" after we bow out. If my health survives me to the rank of 7th Dan (or above) I will be happy and honored to have one student who still refers to me as sahbumnim. (And one well worn gray and frayed Blackbelt, with or without the red stripe). Of course, I could switch to red/white and blue "team" uniforms and have my students just call me Master "Charles"......If I can just get this stiff new master's belt tied to the bumper of my car...hmmm... Seriously check out what Forrest Morgan has to say in "Living the Martial Way" ISBN 0-942637-76-3. Maybe in my next life (if knowledge is cumulative) I'll have a shot at feeling like I could master one art form, until then, looking forward to the next class, and the next......
